Biscuits & gravy: Food of the gods, or deadly toxin?

They're a breakfast staple here in the Midwest, and I happen to like them. OTOH, it IS a heart attack on a plate, especially with fried eggs and hasbrowns...

when prepared properly. The most disgusting thing I've ever seen in my life was biscuits adn gravy at a place in Wisconsin where they used gravy made from chicken stock. Yuck.

12. I always add a bit of chicken stock in mine

helps to deglaze the drippings pan and get the roux in solution, and adds a nice little bit 'o tanginess to the proceedings. And of course, i'd never use milk - cream only. :-)

2. Not a staple up here,

but I've eaten this thing in the States called Chicken fried steak with biscuits and country gravy. Tasty, but I mighty as well have run the catheter into my arm and pump[ed in the lard. Not something I could eat on a regular basis, but yummy once in a long while.

You can get 'em 24 hours a day in any coffee shop. Always with sausage country gravy.

I prefer to make my own, with a shade less pepper and a lot more sausage.

16. I tasted b&g for the first time

when I was driving cross country when I was 22. I then had them for every breakfast on the trip. Ymmmm. I haven't tasted B&G for 3 years because, well, they are not the healthy. It might also have something to do this is not a Calif specialty.

With either redeye or pork sausage gravy. I love making cream gravy from bacon dripping as well. Two hot biscuits, gravy, 3 scrambled eggs, grits, and a large glass of either Coke or iced tea. Mmmmmmm!!!

Southern traditions I can say I am thankful for!!!! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE it!!!!! I never mastered the technique of white gravy, but I love having it at my friends' grandmas' homes, or at the little cafes around the state. Done right, it's heaven!

However, white gravy does NOT go on everything!!!!! My ex-in-laws actually made southern white gravy at Thanksgiving!!! When I realized they planned to pour the turkey drippings down the drain, I stopped them, and asked it they minded if I made some gravy from it, so people could have both. needless to say.... I am divorced.

21. My husband loves my biscuits and gravy!

Don't need to eat again for a couple of days, they fill you up so well!

Extremely fattening. Can't do anything after eating them except lie down and listen to your arteries harden and plug. "Honey, get the Crestor!"

I have to say, though, I do not like them at Cracker Barrel restaurant.
