That damn chicago tremor has me depressed -
Edited on Mon Jun-28-04 03:06 AM by Rabrrrrrr
I grew up in southern wisconsin, and as a child we had a number of minor earthquakes that resulted in not much more than pictures shiftings on the walls. I also lived in the area that God spent some extra time to make a home for herself - Hawaii - and was in a few tremors/earthquakes/earth-shifting-because-of-volcanoes-stuff.

And even here in NYC we had a tremor just a couple years ago, and more than likely we've had nore than one since I moved here in 1992, but since I don't really read any local news at all, I have no idea how much might have happened.

But the depressing thing is - every, and I mean EVERY, tremor/earthquake I've been in, I'VE BEEN ASLEEP FOR IT.

So I've never consciously experienced the earth moving underneath me, and while I don't necessarily want to know what a major dangerous earthquake is, i'd at least like to feel what it's like to feel a minor, safe, one.

ARGH!!

1. I know what you mean
I'm here in the NW burbs of Chicago, and I felt NOTHING!

I've been awake all night and I felt NOTHING.

What's the deal with that?

2. heheh
I HATE when I miss an earthquake out here. I lived in SF for almost a year before I felt one, and was feeling pretty bummed about it.

I haven't felt one here in at least two years, and that always worries me a bit.

3. I was driving on a freeway during an earthquake once
We were coming home from the airport and our phone didn't work. It was all very weird. We had no idea we'd had an earthquake. Kinda felt ripped off, so I know what you mean.:D

5. First earthquake I felt woke me up
But that was in southern California. Obviously, it was not such a minor, safe earthquake, though it wasn't a huge one either. (It was a 5.8, I believe, and was centered only about 7 miles away.)

A few years earlier there had been a minor earthquake felt in Chicago, where I lived at the time. I had been standing on solid ground (tossing a frisbee around with some friends) and didn't feel a thing. The people up on the seventh floor of the building I lived in were all excited about it though, as apparently the building rocking back-and-forth had magnified the effect of the earthquake.

In my experience there's a fine, line between "minor, safe" earthquakes that are actually strong enough to be felt, and the ones serious enough to do real damage, so I'd be thankful you haven't experienced any ones strong enough to wake you up from your sleep.

:-)

6. I slept through an earthquake in a LA high rise hotel!
I was on the 19th floor. Some guy in the elevator had to tell me about it when I was on my way to breakfast.

Cheated, I tell ya!
