New Harry Potter title revealed...
"Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince".

Not as cool sounding as "Order of the Phoenix", but still cool.

8. rowling has it all figured out
the main plot at least (she sent it to a dieing fan, but the fan died before she got the letter, so her name is mentioned in book 3 btw) and i dont think she has that much to go, personally, the release of the title usually indicates the book is nearly done, maybe 7 months

32. I thought Longbottom was of pure wizard descent.
I've only read three of the books, but I seem to recall that Neville was cited as someone who comes from a wizard/witch family but is not skilled, while Hermione, though Muggle-born, is decidedly an overachiever.

16. My office mate says he vaguely remembers that Longbottom is related to
Sirius who also has a blood connection to the Malfoy's. There is a point in Order of the Phoenix where they are looking at a tapestry showing the ancestry of Sirius. That is where he is recalling that from.

18. Another possibility is Hagrid
In book 4 there was some discussion of his parentage. Perhaps through his giant ancestry he is a prince, though I can't imagine where Rowling would go with that.

19. Not possible.
Voldemort's parents both died at least 20 years before James Potter would have been born. Maybe Harry's grandfather?
In the 2nd book we learned that Voldermort was at HogWarts 50 years earlier & his mother died right after he was born & he killed his father around that time.

22. Hagrid is
Half giant. A chapter in Order of the Phoenix was devoted to his attempt at rapproachment of the giants. You never know, Hagrid might turn out to be the half-blood prince. LOL

27. Same here
I like the character a lot, and kind of hope he is the half-blood prince. It would be scary if he really lost his temper, too. I know he's a "gentle giant" kind of character but it could happen.

I need to read order of the phoenix again now. Maybe there are some hints in there I can find now that a title's been announced for the next book.

The only think I don't like is I don't think the readers had enough time to get attached to Sirius Black. He's interesting, but too much in the shadows to feel he's really part of Harry's life. I also think he should have been too slippery to be killed, and sadly, Mr Weasley should have bought the farm instead. This would have had more emotional impact and given Ron and Harry something in common. I like Mr. Weasley's character, don't get me wrong. I'd hate to see him go. I just think his murder would have more impact than Sirius, who hasn't been in the story from the start. I don't feel Harry had much time to get to know Sirius, or even rely on him for much. If Sirius has to be killed off it should have been after another book, maybe the next one or the last one in the series, perhaps I would have felt more attached to him.

Yes, I know it is ostensibly a children's book. But the stories are growing up with the characters.

31. Sirius wasn't developed enough
Edited on Tue Jun-29-04 11:46 AM by Winter1979
you're right about that. It seems he was to be the replacement father for Harry, but never really was. I felt like there wasn't a lot invested in that character, so when he was killed off it neither finished off a story or created a new one. There are deaths in all the HP books, this just seemed like a big deal because they hyped up the death storyline before the book was released. If Mr. Weasley had died, it certainly would have more of an impact, especially on Ron and Harry's relationship. (Ok, I work in children's book publishing, so maybe I have thought too much about this, lol).

34. That's the only real criticism I have of her stories so far
Edited on Tue Jun-29-04 11:00 AM by Liberal Classic
I'm no writer or critic, just a fan.

That is the only weak spot in the story for me. Otherwise, I think they're a lot of fun.

I recently made the mistake of shelling out good money for some Brian Herbert stuff. I'd heard he wasn't as good of an author as his father Frank, but now I guess the rumors are true.

I'd rather be reading Rowling.

48. Sirius will come back.
Notice how he didn't actually "die", he just disappeared behind a curtain, and we don't really know what happened to him. I expect to show up in Book 7 in a real deus ex machina moment.

I'm also pretty sure that I know how the series will end, but I think it's kind of obvious to anyone who knows a little about the type of story she's writing. This is the classic Messiah story that has been told numerous times, and they always end the same way...

Edited on Tue Jun-29-04 11:29 AM by Rainbowreflect
But in the 2nd book they found out the chamber of secrets had been opened 50 years before. Hagid must be in his 60's, but Dumbledore is probably in his 80's or 90's. Wizards & giants must live much longer than muggles.
On edit - I know way too much about Harry Potter.

14. Can't be Voldemort
...because Tom Riddle's parents were mundane people.

Seamus is half and half, I think? He's a minor character, though.

Then again, in the second book Hagrid says there's no wizard that isn't more than half blood.

29. Voldemort's mother was a pure-blood.
He's a direct descendant of the first Slytherin.

Seamus Finnegan is indeed half muggle, but as you said, he's just a supporting character.

A sizeable minority of wizards are pure-bloods, most of them in "old money" families.

44. Si.
After her husband, Tom Riddle Sr., found out what she really was, he ditched her and went home to his folks. She died in childbirth, and little Tom Jr. lived in an orphanage until he got invited to Hogwarts.

Soon after graduating, Tom "Voldemort" Riddle looked up his father and grandparents and killed them.

I'm quoting from the first movie. Maybe it's Seamus?
One edit: Just read that someone already threw this out there, but even though he's a minor character, he's still part of the crew. He could very well have a bigger part in the book than before. Anything's possible.
