1. Contact your credit card company IMMEDIATELY!
Tell them.

Also go to E-Bay and look up the FAQ's for information on what you can do.

3. That sucks!
But you can be comforted by George Bush

"Fool me once. . .well you ain't gonna fool me again."

Close the accounts, start over and NEVER EVER EVER give out personal information when solicited via e-mail. NO COMPANY will ever ask you to go to their website and confirm personal information.

If they needed confirmation, they would ask you after you log into your account "Please update your address" or something like that.

6. NOoooooooooo....it is NOT a real page...
...that is part of the trick. The 'help' link in the email will link to the 'real' eBay...this is part of the deception. Ebay will NEVER contact you and ask you for information about your account through email....THIS IS A FRAUD...REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY.

It will point to somewhere else.

5. Go to Ebay's fraud alert page, and copy the email and the properties text
...to ebay IMMEDIATELY.

Same thing happened to my mother about a month ago.

If you right click on the email, and check the 'properties', you will see that the originating source was NOT an ebay.com source.

CHANGE ALL OF YOUR PASSWORDS AND LOG ON NAMES FOR ALL OF YOUR ONLINE ACCOUNTS IMMEDIATELY. Call your bank, notify your credit card company, and if you have a responsive police department, report it to the local police. This way you have a record of the identity theft. Might be a good idea to notify Social Security, too.

8. From snopes
http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/scams/phishing/ebay02.asp
There are other ones there also.
I tell everyone to check anything you find suspicious on snopes or find another site to confirm. It's worth the effort.

13. why why why did you do that?
NEVER EVER EVER give ANY information out via a note sent by email.

Even if it's from Ebay

Even if it's from your bank

Even if it's from your MOTHER.

No company will EVERRRRRRRRRR ask you to update, or tell you you NEED to update, or suggest that you update via email.

Even if this WAS a real Ebay email (which it's most definitely not), why would ebay need your ATM number AND pin AND social security number? What company would EVER need your PIN?

Look---you need to call your bank and credit card companies NOW. You need to close your accounts NOW. You need to open new accounts with fraud protection on them NOW. You need to call Equifax Credit NOW and put a "fraud alert" on your credit NOW. You need to call the police NOW and file a possible identity theft report NOW.

You need to STOP GIVING INFORMATION LIKE THIS OVER EMAILS. Don't do it over the phone or in letters either. Ebay, your bank, Paypal, the grocery store, etc, will NEVER NEED YOUR ATM PIN NUMBER!?!?!?!??!?!?!!!!!!!!!!

You also need to keep an eye on your ebay account. You'll probably need to shut down the one you have because more than likely it's going to be hacked and used to fraudulently sell stolen or never-there goods. Cancel your paypal account. Contact paypal and let them know the situation. Whoever has access to your ebay account can very easily get access to your paypal account and drain whatever funds you have, or charge up $10,000,000 worth of auctions that technically YOU will be responsible for.

Run several virus scans on your computer as well. THese links are notorious for putting spywear, keyword loggers, password stealers, trojan horses, etc. on your computer.

I hate to sound mean, but you really really really fucked up. You need to get off DU and start calling and cancelling everything NOW.

I cannot stress how important it is for you to call the credit reporting agencies like EQUIFAX and have a fraud alert put on your file. If anyone tries to open credit or extend credit in your name, the Credit Reporting Agencies will have a block on your credit file, basically, and no credit can be given until you give your permission, either in writing or on telephone, that you authorize the credit.

Also, by placing a fraud alert on your file, you'll get a free copy of your credit report. LOOK OVER IT CAREFULLY and notify them INSTANTLY if there's anything on there that you didn't authorize---any accounts, etc. Also, for the next year or five, get copies of your credit report every 6 months. It costs $8 per report, but you will be saving yourself a WORLD of much more pain should you have oogles of fake accounts set up in your name that you don't know about until 10 years down the road when you go to buy a car.

15. I hope I wasn't one of them...
...who sounded like I was ridiculing you...I certainly only meant to be helpful.

Those spoof mails are really deceptive, I do not think you are stupid. I just want everything to work out for you in getting things fixed.

Good Luck to you, and don't mind the insensitive posters who get their kicks out of acting smarter than the rest of us--what comes around goes around.

16. I know you feel bad
if you don't have it go to http://wwwdownload.com and get spyware search and destroy, if you can't get into ebay they've probably put some form of block on you, this should help you get around that, it's free, and run the update as soon as possible. I'm sorry this happened to you, I'm sorry that we have to live with this crap.
