1. Welcome to Wisconsin (and DU!)
I'm in Waukesha myself, so I'm not too familiar with Madison apartments. But it is a great city.

Maybe you could post this in the Wisconsin forum so people who live there will be more likely to see it?

2. Williamson street
There's the world's greatest coop grocery store and some of the coolest cafes and shops. Great parks and not far from state street - the college bar scene with great music every night!

Williamson runs between the two lakes in a geographical location called an Isthmus.

There are a bunch of cool old houses made into aparments and almost everyone has Kucinich signs in their front yards. Big anti-war crowd there.

4. this is my neighborhood
The Willy Street Coop is fantastic and also the Jenifer St. Market. The music scene is great with fantastic local bands at the Crystal Corner and Harmony Bars.

6. The food at the coop is unbeatable
Try the wheat grass shots at the coffee bar there. I know they're wierd, but so energizing. Unlike anything else I've ever tried - better than redbull for energy.

And check out the earthen wall behind the coop - my dad's the one building that. **So proud** :)

10. You should go to one of the weekend workshops
If you like to get a little muddy, that is.

They plan on having it done before the fall weather hits, and it's really just a few of them working during the week.

8. Neighborhood info
Check out: http://www.marquette-neighborhood.org

Lots of links to neighborhood news and info for the Marquette, Willy St. area. Check out the Orton Park Festival coming up ... for my money, just about the best of the Madison neighborhood festivals. The essence of "Old Madison."

a warm, caring community live in the Isthmus area--which is just a mile or so off the Capital square. It is generally zip codes 53703 and 53704. Animals are most welcome. By the way, you'll love Madison--I think--I do.

5. Finding an apartment that will take a dog can be really tough here
Unless it's a very small dog? (under 20 lbs).

We have a German Shepard, and have sort of been stuck in our current apartment since we can't find another one that will take a dog that large.

That being said, I like Willy (Williamson) St for the neighborhood, State street area can be very fun if you are young, and you might find a good deal around the North & Hoard area -- even with dogs.

I don't know where you are from, so I don't know what you might consider 'good' and 'bad'. I moved here from a bigger city, so when friends pointed out what they thought was a 'bad neighborhood', I had to laugh (there were no burned out cars...). From a big city perspective, there really aren't any 'bad' neighborhoods in Madison.

One thing about living downtown on the Isthmus -- you're probably going to pay more. On the other hand, you can do without a car more easily. Don't bet too much on public transportation like buses unless you check out the maps and routes first. Our bus system unfortunately sucks...

We're paying about $725/mo at a central location on the Isthmus, all utilities included, but it's kind of a dump in that it's a 150 yr old house that needs a lot of work.

12. No, but someone should!
Madison is a tremendous bicycle city. Scooters are very popular, too.

I've been getting around on a scooter without a car for over a year.
No parking problems, and it's a lot of fun!
