For me, it'll never get better than "The Natural"...What a movie...

12. The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner

The 1962 film is considered an important landmark in British cinema. Directed by Tony Richardson, it's about a rebellious young man sent to reform school who is encouraged to become a long distance runner and uses the metaphor of sports to study the mind of a rebel. A powerful movie.

I just watched "The Loved One" again over the weekend. Great send up of Hollywood and English ex pats.

60's films have a great energy.

The wildly improbable story of the Pittsburgh Pirates as the doormats of the National League....wait a minute.

Personally I go with "Brians Song" or "Raging Bull" but that poll needs serious revision to actually include some of the best sports movies ever.

True, it can be argued that it's more of a movie about growing up and friendship. That said, baseball was a religion to me when I was twelve. I could name every guy at every position in the National League. (the American League was a mystery to me: WTF is with a pitcher being too much of a wimp to swing a bat?)

Regardless... That flick makes me cry every time I watch it.

I'm a S.F. Giants fan but Lou Gehrig is my all time favorite baseball player.I believe the lead was Gary Cooper. Very good movie.

36. I have a soft spot for "Rhubarb"

It's about a rich guy who owns a baseball team and when he dies he leaves it to his ornery cat, Rhubarb. I think the movie is quite funny. From the 50s, I think.
