I'm in no hurry to find out I lost (again) .... I'll wait until the morning so I can go to bed and have some "rich" dreams tonight! :smoke:

6. Do the math.
Okay I freely admit math is not my strong point. Can someone help me with this?
Here's the deal.

Mega Millions Jackpot Hits Record Levels with a $280 Million Jackpot for the Friday, July 2 Drawing!

For those who prefer to take their cash winnings up-front, it's a pretty nice payday as well. If one lucky cash-option player matches all six winning numbers, he or she will take home a check for approximately $156 million (before taxes), the estimated present cash value of Friday's jackpot!

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/040630/dew013_1.html

That's $156 million (before taxes).

Well when I divide 280 / 2 it comes out to be 149 NOT 156 .So what am I missing?

11. It's the cost of the annuity
It would cost the lottery people $156M to buy an annuity that would pay you $280M over 26 years.

13. Steviet, Gets The Prize
Actually that's a pretty poor annuity. Since the interest rates should be based upon a mixed portfolio of guaranteed and low risk investments, i would think the number should be closer to $170 million. (Based upon 5.25% mixed return, or a net present value of 64%)

That's a pretty generous discount rate to bring it down to 56% of FV.

7. If I won,
Edited on Wed Jun-30-04 11:48 AM by Maestro
I wouldn't say a thing. I would fear losing all my friends. I suppose I would try to live my life the same, perhaps buy a bigger house but nothing overly extravagant and give much of the money away. I would just make sure first that my family is set up for the rest of their lives and some generations beyond.

Maybe when you win, you can flip me a thousand or so, and i'll get help with my delusion. Yeah, that's it. I'll get help with my delusion. Or, another guitar. I'll decide after i get your check.
