I've been trying to get my local paper to print my LTTEs for around 6 months, and they finally called today stating that they are going to print my LTTE today in response to an op/ed piece by Kathleen Parker about how democrats are praying for the war in Iraq to end badly. I lost it after reading this and shot this off to the Editor:
I find it utterly ridiculous that Kathleen Parker would insinuate that democrats pray for defeat in Iraq. There is nothing more further from the truth. Democrats have tried to keep our soldiers safe by asking questions, and I for one am sick of being labelled "un-American" just because I do not believe we should be at war. Is my stating that we shouldn't be at war an example of praying for defeat? I think not. To quote a great president, Thomas Jefferson wrote "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism." I hold this belief dear to my heart for if it were not for dissent we would have never have experienced the civil rights era, the women's suffrage fight, or the abolition of slavery. I find it appalling that in times when dissent is most needed to keep our politicians in line one side of the political spectrum decides to label the other unpatriotic and un-American just because they try to keep the president in check during a war which a great number of citizens of this great nation deem unjust. I pose one simple question. Why do we only send 14,000 troops to Afghanistan to hunt for the man responsible for the deaths of 3,000 Americans while we send 132,000 to Iraq to overthrow an evil dictator whom had been held in check for a decade with sanctions and the new line of weapons inspectors?
