I Shook John Kerry's Hand Last Night... (pics of the rally inside)
Edited on Thu Jul-08-04 08:04 AM by Misunderestimator
I have touched the hand of the next President of our country. Was a good night.

(Qualification: The pics contained herein were taken with a dinky phone camera taken reaching high over my head, so please don't judge my photographic skills by them :))

I went to the rally for Kerry/Edwards in St. Petersburg, FL last night. They hadn't expected a huge crowd since it was a last-minute decision to come there. So they booked a 2,000 capacity hall and ended up turning almost 10,000 away. I was lucky enough (and anal enough about being places on time), that I arrived at 6:15pm, with already 300 or so people waiting outside the hall. They were not due to arrive until 9:00pm. Within half an hour I could no longer see the end of the line (4-5 people wide) behind me:

Waiting outside in the 95 degree heat and sweltering humidity, I felt happier than I've felt in a crowd in my life. Lots of yellling and chanting and laughter. Across the street there were a group of about 15 or so Bush supporters protesting. A funny sight to see with their crude signs, the tired "flip flopper" phrase, or "2 Johns too many." A group of union guys crossed the street and lined up in front of them so they couldn't be seen. Thirty minutes later, police cars arrived and they were nicely escorted back. Here's the HUGE protest crowd (they are the ones behind the fence, with our people standing in front of them):

Once inside, and again, only 2,000 of us were let in, we waited another hour for them to arrive. At about 10:00, John, Teresa, John and Elizabeth came onstage... and the crowd was LOUD.

John Kerry is a truly magnificent statesmen and orator... he moved me last night, and Teresa was elegant and mannered and well-spoken. Elizabeth Edwards spoke about all her close relatives who live in Florida (where she was raised), and JOHN... WHAT A PICK FOR VP!!!! This man KNOWS how to work a crowd. I have NEVER seen a politician more comfortable on the stage. And with all his well-timed gestures and well-timed pauses and well-timed marches across the stage, it never came across as rehearsed.

All together they were up there for an hour (about halfway through taking their jackets off.. and thank god, no sweat stains on either of them). They came down to the front of the crowd at the end.

Here is John right before I made my daring leap to grab his hand:

When I left, many of the thousands that were turned away were still there. They were rewarded with their hours of waiting when they were greeted by the next President and VP and their wives outside.

And here is a pic of them at the very end of the rally from the St. Pete Times:

In this article, they say that there were about 100 protestors. For the 3 hours I stood in line, I saw only about 15-20. Maybe they gathered after happy hour, after we'd gone inside... dunno.

http://www.sptimes.com/2004/07/08/Worldandnation/Thousands_from_bay_ar.shtml

After last night and feeling the energy of a crowd in an area that wasn't expected to have such a turnout... the energy of anger and frustration and sadness and new hope. We WILL have a new President this term. I can FEEL IT!

4. I almost loaded my 3 kids in the van to go to the event
but I thought better of it... I'm glad I didn't because I would have been late and turned away. Plus, 3 kids waiting that long is not a fun thing to do... I'll certainly catch them when they hit Orlando.

7. Yeah, with kids, I don't think I could have done it...
Three hours waiting, then two hours standing, then getting out of there of course. No way. But it was SO worth it for me, even if I do have to load up on ibuprofen this morning for my aching back.

Word to the wise at least, when they ARE in Orlando, get there WAY ahead of time.

Though EXTREMELY happy that I wasn't one of them. ;)

In way though it was better that the crowd overwhelmed them. I hope it's like that everwhere!

20. Morning, shadow...
Best time I've had in a while... really! I was just 20 feet away from the stage... amazing. Wasn't star-struck, but there was an impalpable feeling of being a witness to history being made there last night.

You SHOULD be envious. ;)

here in D.C. you'd never get within 20 feet like that.

I keep hoping prominent Democrats will show up in my favorite Irish bar, but they don't seem to care what I think. :(

9. My favorite
I liked the one of Kerry and Edwards where the confetti is streaming down and Kerry is looking up at the ceiling. You should make copies.
PS - Is it my imagination or does Kerry seem to be happier in the last few days?

11. Really cool!!
They were here in Cleveland yesterday morning, but I didn't know about it until I was on my way to work. It was too late to call off.
I know how you feel about going to one of these. Back when Bill Clinton was campaigning the first time I went to see him speak. He then came down and shook hands and I was right up front so I got to shake the hand of the soon to be, and last elected President. It was also my birthday that day. I was wearing an Elvis meeting Nixon shirt, and Mr. Clinton looked down at it, while shaking my hand and chuckled.

I felt so fortunate to have been able to go at the last minute like that... and SO inspired that 10,000 other people in this area changed their plans as well. No one knew (well, maybe some chosen few) about this rally until yesterday morning. Amazing.

Cool that you got to shake Bill Clinton's hand. :)

26. Interesting local TV coverage
I believe it was Channel 10, the CBS affiliate, which also claimed there were hundreds of protesters across the street. The bulk of their coverage were the Boo$h supporter comments and that idiot in the Flipper costume. Flipper actually stated that some were chosen to lead the country, some were chosen to wear a military uniform yet he was chosen to dress like a dolphin and protest.......a man with a divine porpoise I suppose. :P

Thanks for the inspiring post!

27. I missed the news on it...
All the crews were there.... Channel 9 interviewed someone next to me in line, and the St. Pete Times took my pic and asked a couple of questions.

It's FRUSTRATING that they covered it that way. TRULY, the straggling little gaggle of protestors was pathetic. The porpoise guy must have been DYING in the heat... and he stayed in the costume for hours. What a fool.

28. That's great -- we (Ohio) didn't wear 'em out too much.
It was a beautiful day here, yesterday -- cool and breezy -- so they didn't get too worn out.

Sounds like the same 'crowd underestimation' that went on here, too -- they'd been expecting 5,000-7,000 as late as Monday in Dayton, but the DUers who were there say it was more like 15-20K. Glad to hear Florida's experiencing the same kind of enthusiasm!

I've never been star-struck by anyone, but I have to tell you, shaking the hand of the next President who is our only chance of getting us out of the hell we're in... that's enough for me... was wonderful to meet his eyes for a moment when he shook my hand. Damn.

Glad you got to shake Edwards' hand... I let some of the people behind me have a chance at him. :)

37. LOL, how noble of you!
There was too much pushing around me when Kerry came by--so I was polite and tried not to be aggressive. (If some people didn't back off, someone might have gotten hurt.) When Edwards came by, there was less aggressiveness, so I just stuck my hand through a free spot and voila! I wish I had a scanner, I got some really great pics for a disposable camera.

I'd love to see them. Mine are such bad quality because of the resolution of the cam-phone.

I was already at the front, so I was pretty much pushed to edge when Kerry came around. Everyone was pretty good about it... there was definitely a lot of pushing, but it was more like pressing and not shoving. Other people were also being gracious enough to move out after shaking Kerry's hand for the others... Ah... liberals... gotta love em. :)

Edited on Thu Jul-08-04 10:46 AM by Misunderestimator
The car says "No More Bushit" on the back of the trailer and "Conservatism Loses Lives" or something like that (I can't remember exactly what was after Conservativism).

Every time he drove around (every 15 minutes or so), he taunted the protestors and we all cheered and whooped. I had passed this guy on the highway on the way to the rally and had given him a thumbs up.

Most of the people in the crowd on that side were actually from our side. I never saw more than about 20 idiots over there.

On edit.. Trumad... I believe that is my finger in the pic in the lower left... ;)

Bwahahahaha....alert the FCC!!!!

There was one lone black man holding a Boo$h/Cheney sign and one man who said Kerry was a wimp for getting "nicked" in 'Nam. Once again, aside from the "reporter" mentioning the thousands that were turned away the Boo$h lovers received more screen time to spout their GOP talking points.

Gotta love the fairness doctrine in action.....

My daughter in law and a friend went about 7:30. Too late to get in - but they were amazed by the turnout on such short notice, and quite caught up by the excitement and positive energy of the crowds.

66. Just saw this in a SW FL Paper about the rally...
Edited on Thu Jul-08-04 03:39 PM by Misunderestimator
--------snip
People waited in a line that was more than a half-mile long to get into the rally, but only about two-thousand people were allowed into The Coliseum because of its capacity.

During the event, Kerry made reference to Florida's botched 2000 presidential election. He said "Thank you Florida, where this time not only does every vote count, but every vote's going to be counted."
--------end snip

And THAT inspired an ENORMOUS WHOOP from the audience.
