Bands you could have SWORN were the 'Next Beatles' but weren't
I had to do a music project in 1980 and I discussed why "The Knack" was the next major band.

Obviously they couldn't follow up to 'My Sharona'

1. Never felt that ever.
No music group could ever change the world like The Beatles did.

18. Can't argue with that
but we can hope for something similar in impact.

The 60s was an extraordinary time.

2. Gerry and the Pacemakers
and before them, for a couple of months in 1964, I thought the Dave Clark Five were BETTER than the Beatles. I got over it, of course, but I still love the DC5.

3. came to them later, but The Who
the beatles came first, the Who came 2 years later. The Beatles fizzled and Yoko'd in 69, the Who soldiers on with two founders planted.

For my money Tommy and Quadrophenia are better records than anything the Beatles ever put out. BUT, they most likely wouldn't have come about had the Beatles not recorded Let it Be and Abby Road.

So, I vote for the Who.

4. Mike Gibbons from Badfinger is my neighbor...
Edited on Fri Jul-09-04 10:38 PM by trumad
It's absolutely Badfinger.

BTW: Badfinger was the first band signed by Apple records, and Paul McCartney wrote "Come and Get it". If you ever get the chance to see the Rock-Documentary on VCH about Badfinger do it... It's an extrodinary story.

24. For Me, Badfinger Served as Surrogate Beatles
after their breakup. Their producers must have made a conscious effort to evoke the Beatles on each Badfinger album. They were a terrific band.

10. I second the Who
Not that they weren't the second coming of the Beatles, but that they made several records that were better.

6. they hit puberty
then the management followed through with the "no menudans who reach puberty" and replaced them with new menudans, who didn't have the same Stepfordian appeal.

20. Oasis
If only they could have gotten past their incredible arrogance they might have actually been bigger in North America. I did like them but they were sadly lacking in originality. They basically copied the Beatles.

22. There will never be another Beatles.
Any band who gets stuck with that tag will fail.

"Get the Knack" was a great album. Not just "My Sharona", but the whole damn album. How many records from 1979 can you say hold up as well today as they did then.

Ac/Dc - Highway to Hell
Van Halen II
Pink Floyd - The Wall
The Clash - London Calling
The Knack - Get The Knack

There might be some others, but those are the ones off the top of my head. The reason the other 4 albums on that list are revered more is because those bands are remembered for themselves, and not for skinny ties and what some suit at Capitol records said about them.

Of course, the band didn't help themselves by playing "Hard Days Night" as an encore either :(
