Something about trying to send a flag message while underwater.

3. Third one must have had a hell of a captain
to beach it so far inland, and keep it upright.

Damned impressive!

The second one doesn't show, by the way, and one other one doesn't show, but I can't tell which one in the series that is. Quite likely the fifth one.

5. HH, looking at those, I hear my big brother reciting (to tune of Hot Rod
Lincoln)
Now, me 'n my buddy, Sawbbie Joe
Set out in a can from Seabasco.
Didn't have much chow & the fuel was low.
But that dog gone can could really go.

We were sailing a long
in the middle of the night.
Just sailin' along like a tin can might,
when a cruiser behind us blinked his lights...

Can't remeber the middle verses about the race between the can & cruiser but my brother was a Coastie and I recall the end he chanted:

Looked over the fantail.
Saw something comin'.
Must've been a jet
by the way it was hummin'.

When it passed us by, I looked the other way.
That cruiser crew had nothin' to say.
Cuz passing us by and churnin the sea
was a weather beaten Coast Guard AVP.

6. More Ships!

Fond memories...
(BTW, I remember that third photo of yours very, very well - as well as the "tear gas" blockhouse and fire-fighting training facilities near it...)

10. USS Norton Sound, the worlds best armed
non combatant. More weapons systems on one ship than you can shake a stick at.

And the Elliot? Did you serve on her?

12. Laz loves the Norton Sound
He's an AEGIS fanatic. Of course, not only because it's one of the best of the fire control systems the Navy has, but it might also be 'cause that was my first station after "C" school and I've spent most of my career working in AEGIS. He thinks that's just too kewl.

BTW, can you read this?

The USS Elliot was the ship I was first assigned to in 1979 while still in "C" school...due to a misspelling of my first name and the fact that wimminfolk just weren't suppos'd to do well in math and engineering, not to mention handle combat scenarios. Needless to say, that assignment lasted as long as it took for my instructors to quit rolling on the floor and call up the detailer. Luckily, the 'Sound had just (within that month, in fact) opened up some billets for females, so I had the joy of being the very first permanent female enlisted crewmember to report onboard - two weeks before female berthing had been finished and the rest of the enlisted women had been assigned.
One learns to deal with sexual harassment very, very quickly - and with a wicked sense of humor - in such situations.

The Fox...well, in 1980, while we were both in Long Beach getting re-fitted, they stole my fire control consoles from the pier because theirs hadn't come back from factory overhaul yet. Unfortunately, ours were set up for AEGIS, and wouldn't work with a Terrier fire control system. I spent 2 weeks onboard her a couple months later helping to get my consoles off her and back on the 'Sound. Also, in 1990, she was the first ship I directed an overhaul on when I became a reservist/civilian; I spent enough time on her I and several other of the engineers were considered part of the crew.

Anyway, enough sea stories. The grilled, stuffed porkchops are needing some work.

14. November Alfa Sierra Uniform
Presumably Norton Sound's international call sign.

I served on USS Eliot from 1993 to 1995. I made SM1 there.

I had a similar (but by no means identical) experience with USS Sides. Shortly after I made PO1, I reported aboard Sides 'for duties assigned'... only to be told I had a ordmod, I was going to USS Copeland, and they were deploying on Monday (this was Friday afternoon). My wife was NOT happy.

You're probably one of the very few people who know who Douglas Bader is! He was a hero of mine from the time I read about him in high school.

on edit: I'm impresssed that you know not only the current military but you understand and appreciate military history also!

15. Well, after 20 years of serving...
I should know SOMETHING about the current military.

History is one of my great loves; not even HS history teachers (B-52's led the attack on Pearl Harbor) could kill it.
