Working on a convert

I have a friend in Texas who fancies herself a die hard republican. Her parents are small business owners and are proud of their picture of them with the shrub when he was "Governor" of Texas.
All this week she has called during the convention and heard it on TV at my house and made snide remarks. Like any other repug there is no talking to her because...well, Clinton got head.
Well...this morning she calls crying because her 20 year old son just had told her that he is joining the military. She is worried now that he is going to Iraq and going to get killed. And on top of that, some kid she knows that is one of the branches told her "Next war will be Iran and that one won't be a picnic like Iraq is".
I am a strong supporter of the folks in the military, so I wasn't going to tell her he is crazy for joining or anything. What I did tell her was that the military will be good for her son and there is no reason to be so worried about her son going to Iran and getting killed. Then I managed to slip in the "If John Kerry gets elected...."
She didn't come back with the typical snide remark this time. Maybe I might be able to crack this one. If I can, it will be a huge Yee haw for me. Her parents will hate me, but who gives a shit?
I just thought I would share. Mainly because I had to listen to her for the last three years tell me how great * is, all the way until last night. Then this morning...well, things change.

It does annoy almost beyond tolerance that some people just don't get it until it actually hits them in their own gut. Empathy, like common sense, just ain't that common, I guess.

Then, all of a sudden, some people seem to develop a conscience.
