"The Village" ***SPOILERS***
Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 08:11 PM by TXlib
I saw this film yesterday. I knew the monsters had to be fake; I figured the Elders were using fear to keep people from leaving, but I didn't imagine the film was set in modern times.

I spent most of the movie annoyed at the extremely stilted, affected dialogue -- I was wondering if everybody in it was mentally defective, or something. It makes sense, now; the elders were trying to hearken back to a different time, and were themselves acting.

But, I have to wonder why that is. Why not keep the date and the modern way of speech, and just set all technology and history back 100 years? Or go and live with the Amish?

ON EDIT:

What was the twist leaked to the Net?

1. I was disappointed by the movie
This one just slowed boiled unitl the big "twist". There was no substance and the twist wasn't all that shocking to me.

I loved Bryce Dalls Howard (I think that's her name) the blind girl. She was amazing.

The movie tried to make too big of a statement about safety concerns in a modern world, the loss of innocence of our children, blah, blah, blah.

You had to reach too far in this one, imo.

BTW, I don't get your last paragraph. Could you explain?

4. My last paragraph...
But, I have to wonder why that is. Why not keep the date and the modern way of speech, and just set all technology and history back 100 years? Or go and live with the Amish?

That one?

I meant simply that if you were to do what these people did, the ones who established the village and raised their children to believe it was a simpler time, why bother trying to affect linguistic changes that you think would be more appropriate 100 years ago? It only increases the chance you'll screw up and let the cat out of the bag. Plus, while it's a "Oh, that explains it now" sort of thing when the twist is revealed, it's annoying to spend the whole movie wondering whether the dialog writer did a horrible job, and made them all sound stilted, or whether they were all supposed to be a bit 'slow'.

The fewer lies and deceptions one practices, the more likely the lie is to be convincing.

2. IS THAT IT?
Sheesh. Another one guessed from the ads. If Night is going to keep on making "twist" films then he should try harder.
