I just watched the pilot - and I was thinking "what a great show!!"

Then I watched some eps...what dreck!

How is it this great pilot can be the only good thing about that series?

1. That show is so disturbing!!

Some dark stuff....

I've watched it occasionally, anyway...

I thought the pilot was really intense & scary. I had mixed feelings, but basically the show makes a really good point, so it's worth it, I suppose.

I mean, it doesn't glamorize cosmetic surgery or the lifestyle, at all... It really just shows how spiritually empty and totally gruesome, it can be.

What makes you feel it's all lousy? The acting, or the plots, or something else?

2. The storylines
In the pilot, that was such a tight storyline...the whole deal with the Colombian Mafia Pedophile and all...

But the other eps seemed way too "Psychological disorder of the week" to me. Oh boy, Christian is going to a sex addicts meeting...I dunno just seemed much more like a soap opera.

3. Yep.. IT IS a soap opera...

Just more well-acted than most, and w/graphic sex & violence, for the 21st century!

I don't know... I have mixed feelings on it... A little too much sensationalism for me, I guess. And man, a few were just plain old depressing and awful!

You know... I have my news if I want to feel depressed... I don't look for it in my entertainment, usually (barring VERY good films)...

4. I guess I'm just spoiled by Six Feet Under
Which has, I'm afraid, become more of a soap opera these days.

6. Yep! If you do decide to get into it tho
Go rent the DVDs from the first season. Like many HBO shows, its hard to jump in the middle of this show.

7. I live in the Stone Age, or so have been told...

I don't have HBO, and I don't have DVD player!

...Incredible, huh?

8. The message it gets across is that people who are in need of
vanity plastic surgery have the kind of insecurities that make good voyeuristic prime time t.v.

Personally, I think the families involved are way too dysfunctional to get my vote of sympathy.

9. I just thought it was so creepy and dark --

that it might turn people off having excessive cosmetic surgery. By showing the graphic nature & the sheer violence of the procedures, it does create a really dark atmosphere, I think. Of course, this is me moralizing here & not the show...

I just don't understand why people would get their faces carved up for no reason but LOOKS.... :puke:

Just thinking about it upsets me, and it seems so sad.

The utter spiritual emptiness/psychological unhealthiness (or as you said dysfunctionality) of the lives of the characters, I think highlights how totally dehumanizing and wrong it is to base one's life & self-worth on these superficial things that they all do in the show.

I think the show is interesting because it makes all these important points in a very shocking manner, that we find hard to watch & yet hard to look away from at the same time...
