I was just frightened beyond belief
I had just fallen asleep, in that barely twilight stage, when all of a sudden my exterior burglar alarm went off (not the interior alarm first, as when someone opens a door, this would be an attempted forced-break in type of thing).

I didn't know what to do; I was going to turn off the alarm on my bedroom panel, but then I saw flashing lights downstairs, so I ran down there. There was a cop banging on the door and his car was right out front.

He just happened to be driving by when the alarm started so he stopped. He spent 30 minutes carefully searching the property and all the doors and windows. He was so nice. He didn't find any sign of forced break-in at all. It must have been some problem with the alarm that got tripped.

But still, I am so frightened. I immediately called my parents, of course, and my dad was on his way over to pick me up and take me over there, but I talked him out of it. The sun will be up in an hour anyway.

I just got so scared, and with the things that have happened to me in my recent past, I don't know what to say, except I was really scared. I don't want to be afraid of living in this house alone. I'm just hoping it was some kind of aberration, but anyway, I'm very frightened right now.:scared:

5. Are you sure the cops in your neighborhood can be trusted?
Personally, I have very little confidence in local authorities or several neighbors for that matter. The linked story pretty much substantiates why I feel that way.

Blair Davis with his Texas Star hibiscus plant.
Landscape contractor Blair Davis was in his northwest Harris County home around 2 p.m. Tuesday when there was a knock at his door.

Davis said he hadn't even gotten his hand on the doorknob when it flew open and he was looking at the barrel of a pistol.

Behind the gun were about 10 members of the Harris County Organized Crime and Narcotics Task Force, who burst into the home, guns drawn, and began shouting at him to get down on the floor.

6. Well, since this particular officer seemed genuinely concerned
for my safety and didn't pull a gun on me, I'm rather comforted. I just spoke to the alarm company, and they said there was a disturbance involving a possible glass break in my family room.:scared:

It's very dark there now, and even though he had a flashlight, who knows. I'm scared.

15. Could one of your cats have jumped against the window
Maybe saw a bird outside and lunged for it? Or just rubbed against the window a little hard?

9. If there was anyone there...
the alarm and the police car probably frightened them off. Burglars etc usually go for easy targets, and alarms like yours are just too much bother for them.

I would rest assured that if anyone had tried to break in, your alarm did its job very effectively.

10. Sometimes if it's not adjusted right...
Weird things can set off the glass breaking detector. We needed the alarm people to come out and readjust ours a few years ago because it would go off sometimes just because of how the wind would hit the window. The noise of the wind, plus a vibration would set it off. Even now, if a kid screams, it can set it off. Those things aren't infallible. I hope everything's ok and you're sleeping peacefully now though.

Not only is it safer, we need the people. ;-)

Some people still don't lock the doors at night.

19. Yeah.
Lots and lots of room in flyover territory. And depending where you live the winters aren't all that bad.

16. If it was a bad guy he probably won't be back.
Now that he knows you have an alarm system and that the police will be extra vigilant of your house. This doesn't mean you shouldn't take the usual precautions though.

Just a thought. Do you have a morning newspaper delivery? The "plop" of the newspaper landing close to the house could have set of the alarm if it is that sensitive.

21. The part where the alarm was tripped is on the side of the house
far from where the papers land, but yeah, that occurred to me too. Also, the cats were all asleep up on the bed, so who knows what set it off.

The alarm co. is coming out here today, hopefully. Thanks.

18. I'm so sorry to hear this
I hope that you eventually got back to sleep.

The bad guy won't be back. The police, I'm sure, will make a few extra trips past your house over the next few days to make sure everything is fine.

I'm thinking of you, and sending .

It probably was one of your cats or something like that, but I can understand how you could be scared right now. Get some rest. :hi:
