How fast do you read? (test)
Edited on Sun Aug-01-04 03:09 PM by AZDemDist6
and what is cool is what they have you read.....

http://mindbluff.com/askread.htm

my results:

You read between 350 - 400 words per minute. Well above average reading level. (The average rate is between 200 - 250 words per minute.) It is assumed that you did not skim the words nor fail to understand the meaning of what was read.

3. Holy shit
I scored between 700 and 750. Did the test a second time because it seemed too high, and got the same score on a different passage. Well now I feel like an ass.....I am always teasing my husband because he reads so much slower than I do. I did not realize I was reading so fast. I thought he was extra slow. oops

I scored 400-450 wpm. I always thought I was a slow reader.

I automatically semi-skim. I taught myself to do it in college, now I can't read any other way.

I "read" in JFK's (mental) voice to make sure I wasn't "skimming."

6. my results--and a comment
You read between 500 - 550 words per minute. Very good reading level. (The average rate is between 200 - 250 words per minute.) It is assumed that you did not skim the words nor fail to understand the meaning of what was read.

My comments: There is nothing to test comprehension. How is it verified that words were not consciously skimmed? For that matter, how much sub-conscious comprehension occurred?

I will admit that I read it faster than I was comfortable reading. As I've gotten older, I've found more enjoyment out of reading slower and taking moments to consciously contemplate the words.

The typography of the page stinks. Everyone would likely have higher scores if that were improved.

I also found a few lost seconds between pressing the start button and finding the scroll bar location, before I could actually start reading. I rarely use the 'page down' button.

10. 100-150 words a minute. Basic reading ability.
I knew I was a slow reader. That's why I had so much trouble in college. It would take me forever to read reading assignments and I also had a tough time with comprehension. Oh well. At least I can read.

13. There should be some kind of comprehension
testing attached. I know I read very fast. And I could repeat the gist of what I had read right after completion. But most of it would fade from my consciousness quite quickly. But then, other than politics, most things do these days. Just ask my husband !

15. 450 - 500 wpm. I read fast, but I then savor certain poetic words/phrases
And will slow my pace and perhaps even re-read them.

JFK's inaugural, for example, is loaded with goodies. You can be reading this at a good clip and then run across a phrase like "before the dark powers of destruction unleashed by science engulf all humanity in planned or accidental self-destruction," which is so powerful in its imagery that it begs to resonate in the mind a moment before the reading eye moves on.

16. I was 600-650
but I was going a bit more slowly than usual.

See it depends on what a person is reading. THAT speech is something you really can't (and shouldn't) rush. But other things I would read MUCH more quickly.
