Who cuts your lawn?
I had a landscaper cut my lawn for $20 bucks a cut, but my landscaper moved. Now i'm looking for a new landscaper, but they all charge around $40 a cut. For that price i should just buy a lawnmower! The problem is... i have bad lawn allergies. What would you do?

1. I cut my own.
It's a small yard. If I only trim, mow and skip the edging, I can be done in about an hour.

4. I usually do it, but now my son wants to do it (yea!!).
He started doing some of the neighbor's yards too (he just turned 9). He does a good job and works pretty cheap.

Do you have a big lawn? Maybe there are some enterprising young ones around that would do it cheaper.

5. Neighborhood kids are frequently available -
prices vary, but around 25.00 is reasonable for an average size yard.
They use their own equipment too.

6. I'm a DIYer
It's not all that attractive -- but I live in an older neighborhood, and the weeds are just as old.

I have 300 square feet of black sheeting on a portion of my lawn right now. I'm killing the grass and weeds organically (that area of the lawn weeds up constantly, and I hate using chemicals). I'm gonna re-seed it and hope for the best. (My dad: "Call a landscaper, and they'll come in with a sod lifter and re-landscape that whole area." Me: "Or, I can put $15 of sheeting down, wait a while, rake up the dead stuff and then spread $2 worth of new seed.")

10. Get better seed than what you can get for $2.
You'll be a lot happier with the results of your work.

13. The bag will cost more than $2, but the amount it will take to fill
the area won't.

10# of Scott's costs $30 but it covers 8,000 square feet. I need less than 1/20th of that.

14. Ack! Go to a good, local nursery.
They'll sell you the stuff that grows best for your area, land type, dirt type, etc... You're not going to get that with any Scott's product.

15. Actually -- that was my intent
We've got a decent garden store, and their store-brand stuff is actually a little cheaper than Scott's, but formulated for a Wisconsin lawn.

But Scott's was the only brand I recognized when I looked up the price quote. (Yes, I am a giant nerd that way.)

11. Glass works better.
My neighbor just killed his entire lawn this way. He took a sheet of plexi on a hot summer day, hosed the grass off, and laid the plexi down moving it to a new spot every 30 minutes. Everywhere the glass lay was bright yellow and dead the next morning. The plexi, especially with a little added water, creates a solar-oven effect and literally cooks the grass, weeds, and anything else that happens to be under it (one of his kids rubber balls actually liquefied).

Costs a little more than sheeting, but it's just as environmentally benign and is much quicker. If you have a glass screen door or an old window lying around, you can even do it for nothing.

12. Hm...if this doesn't work, I'll try that
It's a big area, but I have a bunch of old windows in the garage. Thanks.

8. Get a push-reel mower.
Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 11:19 AM by HuckleB
It's much cheaper, virtually maintenance free, and it doesn't toss the grass and weeds and what have you all over heck in order to get one's allergies going through the roof. Yeah, it's a little more work to push it, but not that much, and who can't use a workout, anyway? Besides, a push-reel is actually a better, healthier way for your lawn to get cut. The spinning blades of gas and electric mowers pull and damage lawns.

16. The homeowner's association
Taking care of the yard was a major reason we moved. I have severe allergies so I refused to cut the lawn. I wanted to tear it all up and plant native plants. My husband wanted the lawn yet he travels a lot and hates household chores. Noone cut it for weeks. We argued about the lawn so we moved. Now, someone else takes care of it. :-)
