Lobster Rage! Woman Shoots At Lobster Divers

KEY WEST, Fla. -- The hunters became the hunted when, say authorities, a woman in the Florida Keys fired a shot at lobster divers in the canal behind her house.

No one was hurt.

Police officers took a .38-caliber handgun from under Mary Alice Workman's pillow, along with a flare gun and a BB gun, then arrested Workman.

The 69-year-old woman's been charged with aggravated assault for allegedly firing the shot Thursday near a pontoon boat being used by divers participating in the state's annual two-day sport lobster hunt.

Workman told The Associated Press the event is "just a big scam for the hotels to make money." She said the canal is hers, the divers have no business in it, and they're taking too many lobsters.

Workman spent Thursday night in jail and was released Friday.

2. Just plain nuts. Florida survives on tourism. For two days a year,

folks from all around come in to nab a couple of lobsters (and there is a limit as to how many one can bag). If the woman can't take it, she should simply arrange to be away for that weekend. Or move to a place where tourism is not the life's blood of the community.

BTW, ya'll come to the Oldest (continuously inhabited) City (of European origin) in the USA anytime. We would love to have you VISIT! There's lots to do here AND we have many many miles of GREAT BEACHES too! :D

6. Well, if it really is her canal...

...then I disagree, she shouldn't have to put up with trespassers just to satisfy the local board of tourism. HOWEVER, if she wants people off her land and out of her water, she really should be posting it. A pile driven mid-canal with a large no trespassing sign should do it.

She should be prosecuted bigtime for this one though. Nobody anywhere should be permitted to shoot at unarmed trespassers outdoors. Even in Texas, ground zero for the whole "All Intruders Will Be Shot" mentality, shooting at unarmed people outside is still considered to be a prosecutable offense.
