12. IMO, the "soul" is just a result of knowledge of mortality

and as far as I know only primates (maybe whales and dolphins) and higher understand that life is fininte. I don't think the "soul" is a tangible thing, just a mindset. Therefore it's not even a valid question, since no living being can possibly know if the human soul even exists.

There is a significant body of scientific theory that appears to contradict the notion of a soul. Thus, while it has not been proven that the soul does not exist, it is rational to believe that it does not.

However, there is a significant body of anecdotal evidence of numerous different kinds which, if valid, suggests that both humans and animals do have souls. Thus, while it has not been proven that the soul does exist, it is rational to believe that it does.

Thus the following breakdown:

1. To say "Souls exist" is not rational.
2. To say "I believe that souls exist." is rational.
3. To say "I believe that souls do not exist." is rational.
4. To say "Souls do not exist." is not rational.
