419 lb Halibut Caught In Norway - Largest Ever Using A Rod
<snip>

A Dane fishing in Norwegian waters landed a 190-kilogram (419 lb) halibut, the largest ever caught using a rod. The fish, which was caught between Vannøya and Fugløya in Troms, took an hour and a half to reel in and three men to get it into the boat, newspaper Nordlys reports.

The previous record for a halibut caught using a rod weighed in at 161.2 kilos and was taken in Rogaland in 1997 according to Chris Appleby from the magazine Villmarksliv, who is a member of the jury that registers the records.

"I thought something was wrong with the scales when it stopped at 190 kilos," said Thomas Buge Nilsen, the Dane that caught the massive fish.

The halibut, which had to be moved by forklift, had impressive vital statistics indeed: 190 kilos, 2.38 meters (7 feet 9 inches) long, 1.26 meters (4 feet 1 inch) wide and 35 centimeters (13.7 inches) thick.

Nilsen used pollack as bait and bottom-fished, at a depth of about 40 meters.

Lost record: Janusz Kunat of Gustavus lies next to a halibut he caught Sunday near Glacier Bay. Kunat said he is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 210 pounds, and the fish weighed more than twice what he does.

A halibut that could have weighed 470 pounds didn't escape Sunday from charter boat operator Janusz Kunat, but it won't be going into the record books.

While the fish didn't get away, he said, he believes a world record did. The fish was not weighed before it was cut up and more than one person helped land it.
