I have a question about Drama/Theater...

... I am going to order a play called "Asylum" and I was browsing on-line and found to editions... a regular script and a director's script... is it common for authors to write two editions of their plays? I always thought that all a director needed was the same script the actors were using. What kind of info would be in the directors edition?

Well, you have the base script that is the product of the playwright, then you have what is actually produced. Directors have to work within specific time/budget constraints, etc., so edits get made in the script. That would be the difference. The playwright didn't write it, but during production edits were made for that specific production.
