oh no...our cat is stuck under our new house.any advice?
Edited on Mon Aug-02-04 03:26 PM by Race4Peace
She is under the back porch. the house is elevated on cement blocks, and she got through there somehow, and now she can't get out. There's an entrance that she could get through, and I have it open so that she could get through, but she can't see it because of the AC vents under the house. I could cover up the way she came in so that she doesn't try to get out through that small hole, get stuck and sufffocate. then again, she might lose hope, think I hate her, and not try to get out at all.

BTW this is no ordinary cat. she is big, and weighs about 12 lbs. she almost never meows, but she has meowed about 10 times since she went under there(probably 4 to 6 hours ago).

Please advise.

1. Tuna will lure a cat through the eye of a needle.
Worth a shot.

6. My dad already suggested that.
I would try that, but now I've lost her. I'm calling for her, trying to get her to come to the place she came into, but now she's not coming!

2. Do you know where she is? Is she meowing?
Can you try to coax her out that opening by calling her?

3. Put some of her food near the opening she can get out of. Her nose will
lead her there.

4. Our cat decided to go under the neighbors
back porch and not come out. He is an indoor cat and we don't want him outside getting fleas. He is a longhair mainecoon weighing 24 lbs. There are a couple of things to try: run the can opener, cats seem to know what that means (fresh tuna?), fresh catnip on a stick as a lure.

5. A meow...
...that starts low and short and ends high and long means that you have milk. Most cats will come to that if repeated a few times. That's how mothers call their kittens.

27. If you try that call, pronounce it...

with a roll in the middle (like the Spanish rolled "R" and the high ending note sounding like a questioning inflection.

"MmmmmuurrrRRRRRRR-eeeee-iiii??" as if you were trying to 'meow' the word "Marie".

Common mother cat "kitten call". Actually, closer to the call would be to eliminate the first syllable and simply go to "rrRRRRR-EEE-iiiii??"

Called many a kit in my day with the "rrrreeee?" mama-call. Strong scented food by the opening works also.

8. If you just moved, she may want to hide out for a while
Cats are not people. They don't lose hope, think you hate them, or not try to get out. They're also better than people at going without food or even water for a while.

On the other hand, they will holler for help. Ever had a cat stuck up a tree? They will meow pitifully for a good while before deciding they really can get down on their own.

I've known kittens to get stuck in small places they genuinely couldn't get out of (like inside a cinderblock wall.) I've never known it to happen to an adult cat.

I would try speaking to her occasionally in soothing tones, putting some really yummy food near the exit you want her to use (and maybe calling her from over there), and otherwise giving her time to settle down and figure it out on her own.

I'll bet she comes out by evening, probably wearing her best What's-all-the-fuss-about expression.

seriously, she's probably afraid of the new house. Give her a little time. My cat ran away when we moved and turned up at the old house 5 miles across town.

All cats should be hosed on general principal. Or is it principle? Either way, the cat should get the hose.

33. Will the cat play with stuff?
Get some string and some kind of toy your cat would like (catnip mouse)? Throw it as near as you can and slowly reel the cat in.
Or better yet, a large firecracker on a string..............I know, I couldn't resist.

i trap ferals for spay & release as well as adoption. if they can open a head size hole, they're gone.

had a 8 week old kitten get under a door with a 1" airflow gap @ the bottom.

36. yes
if she doesn't resist too much or back out of reach.. try to use the neck pinch. grasp the loose skin at the back of her neck & pinch it. there's a nerve plexus ther that mom cats use to control kittens. male cats bite there during mating, to immobilize the female.

be careful not to tighten the skin or you'll choke; just the loose skin, ease her fwd, & work her shoulders through. the rest is easy.

39. front 1st is easier;
they panic when pulled from behind, feels like they're being attacked by another animal. lots of dogs are neckbreakers.

to ease them through the hole forward, 1 @ a time. once she's that far, the rest will slip through on it's own.

40. Put something that
smells like you near the opening, like a dirty t-shirt or a sweat shirt. Put some food by it. If she got in she can get out. It might take a day or two for her to get really hungry.

When it gets dark, you can put a light by the hole. She'll notice that even if it's behind something.

You could know the wall out...
