Listening to Dvorak Cello Concerto
in B minor, Op.104

2nd movement, achingly beautiful! Wonderful concerto but damn that second movement has me almost in tears.

3. You must
I think you would love his work judging from what I have read of your listening experience. Prepare yourself for some intense emotion. :hi:

2. I've performed this concerto.
The second movement is indeed the heart of this piece. Also note the slow coda to the last movement: he added this after the death of his sister.

4. As a Cellist?
I played it once before. I play the clarinet so I relish the chance to play Dvorak anytime but most especially this one. The second movement is one of those really choice parts for us. He always writes great clarinet parts though but this is particularly nice. We are doing it this year and I just hope I can get through it without the tears it brings just listening to it.

7. Years ago, I played that with Starker...
It wasn't the London Symphony, though! :)

How's your orchestra doing?

8. We are hanging in there.
It is so difficult these days with money so tight. I am back on the board as the orchestra president, (I just can't keep away from all the politicking!)so I am getting the real view. We will survive I think but not by a lot. We are planning out 60th year celebration for 2005-06 and that should bring in a little more so eeking by. How about yours? We are hoping for a raise next year since we only make a pittance anyway but we may have to wait.

9. Good for you!
My Monday night gig took a big hit this year thanks to arts-funding cuts. I doubt if I'm going to get the raise that would make it more profitable for me to perform than teach; but I'll stick with it for awhile.

10. Was that your orchestra job?
It wasn't, was it? That would hurt. We don't have any real options here so I don't know what I would do! Somehow playing in the city band of a neighboring city in the sweltering heat, as good as it is, does not even begin to meet the symphony feeling. Nothing, is like the dress in black feeling on a stage, nothing.

11. It's one of them......
Everything is part time freelance around here except for National Symphony, BSO, and the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra.

My "Monday night gig" is playing concertmaster with a community orchestra. It's a nice group of people, and there are some excellent winds and brass. But generally speaking, we're not talking about intense dedication.....at least, not from the string players.

It's a fun gig, though, and the conductor is first rate. So I stay with them.
