So, 2 weeks ago, I read my job in the classifieds. A co-worker told me
not to worry, the firm was understaffed, my job was not imperiled. I relaxed but kept alert.

Last Friday at 5:00 p.m., in O. Henry tradition, I was let go, but with two weeks severance because it was recognized that I worked my ass off for seven weeks. And the job and I weren't a good fit.

Well, at least I know I wasn't paranoid, just prescient.

2. getting canned
I'm so sorry about your job loss.

Almost the same thing happened to me this past Friday (7/31), although I didn't notice my job being advertised.

My immediate supervisor fled out of town the day before, supposedly to attend a funeral. Her boss walked in at 3 pm, handed me a severance check, and told me I wasn't "a good fit" with the company. I'd been there 8 months and had a whole e-mail folder of thank-yous and complimentary notes. I've never been fired in my life -- and I'm 52.

My husband thinks it's because I was doing some work for Homeland Security (I worked for a govt. contracting firm) and that DHS did a check and found out I post on all these progressive websites. I can't prove it, but it certainly sounds like a possibility.
Oh well, at least now I'll get a summer vacation.
Good luck job hunting!

3. I wouldn't worry about the DHS tracking you ...
I wouldn't worry too much about the DHS tracking you.

As a computer scientist, I can tell you that it's very unlikely that they have developed an algorithm specific enough to match real names with posts on a website.

That and the computer forensics guys in the government are, for the most part, absolute buffoons.

4. I am mutually sorry that you lost your job. That really sucks.
Don't you wish that you had actually DONE SOMETHING that would have justified getting fired? Treasure your thank-yous and compliments. They will get you through the rough days. (Warning: I spent a little too much time on DU when I should have been job-hunting. Don't make the same choice unless you can take-or-leave the job world.) Good luck!

5. Thanks
Thanks, No!

Our situations demonstrate how expendable people have become under the B*sh regime. Corporations are treating workers like Kleenex tissues. The corporations are in charge, so they don't feel like they need to play by the rules or behave with human decency.

I want a government in which the least among us MATTERS. A government that's run for the people, not the corporations.

Years ago I visited Italy, where I learned that the profits from several nationalized commercial products, including tobacco and butter, were used solely to subsidize old-age pensions for everyone, and to operate Italy's marvelous railroads. This would never happen here, because corporate profits matter, but American people do not.

Good luck in your job search.
