Toddler Bitten By Monkey In Brooklyn Supermarket
Monkey Trained To Help Disabled Owner

POSTED: 2:49 pm EDT August 3, 2004

NEW YORK -- A monkey trained to help a disabled man with chores bit a 2-year-old boy in a Brooklyn supermarket, authorities said.

The boy, Thomas Romano, was shopping with his grandparents at a Key Food store at about 4 p.m. Monday when the monkey bit him on the arm. He was treated at Maimonides Medical Center and released.

The monkey's owner, Steven Seidler, 45, said the animal attacked after Romano pulled its fur. Seidler is confined to a wheelchair and uses the monkey to help him open doors and pick things up.

But Romano's grandmother, Helene Romano, said the bite was unprovoked.

2. People should keep their kids in check
we have dogs and kids are always trying to walk them! I don't want them to walk my dogs. I never tried to walk other peoples' dogs when I was a child. I also don't always want to be telling kids no, so I wish their parents would get on the stick. These are little kids, often 6 and under, and I hardly trust them to walk my dogs near a street. I'm sure it's worse with a monkey.

Further, everyone knows you are supposed to leave service animals alone so they can focus on their job.

17. It was a two year old who wanted to play with the monkey

How can you say he deserved it? I have seen kids play with dogs and cats pretty roughly without anyone getting hurt. Annoying a domesticated pet is not the same as being an evil bastard who likes to mistreat them, ok? The grandparents and the owner should have been especially cautious since monkeys are wild animals, trained or not.

grandparents thinking - letting a 2-year old get near a monkey. Even a dog. Many otherwise nice animals "could" bite a 2-year old who is grabbing at them or jumping up and down. Even if the bite was unprovoked, the child was near enough to get bitten and he should never have been that close. On the other hand, if the monkey was running around free in the store, it could be the fault of the monkey's owner for not controlling it.

Edit: No way do I blame it on the 2-year-old.

If the child did pull the monkey's fur, the grandparents shouldn take responsibility. Regardless, they shouldn't have let the child near the monkey.

15. I'd like to bite the grandmother for being so irresponsible...
No, I can't be 100% CERTAIN, but I'd be willing to bet, the child approached and probably harrassed the monkey. Normal behavior for both child and monkey, but one that the stupid grandmother should have been able to prevent.

I'm sorry the child was injured, but I sure as hell hope the handicapped guy does't end up paying the price for having a monkey assistant...
