Bookends is the best album ever... Flame away!
I'm a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan and I think that Bookends is the best album ever.

Nothing describes the passage of life and the decisions we make better than Bookends.

It starts off with the Bookends theme, which represents birth. Then we go through childhood(Save the Life of my Child), becoming confused young adults(America), a failing marriage (Overs), old age(Voices of Old People and Old Friends), and finally the first half of the album closes with Bookends again, which I think represents death. Because the bookends of life are birth and death.

And obviously the songs themselves are beautiful. And although it's the first half of the album that makes it great, there are some great tunes on the second part like Mrs. Robinson and A Hazy Shade of Winter.

I already know the responses I'll get are that Dark Side of the Moon or even Sgt. Pepper's are better, and they are great too, but I think Bookends is the best.

1. Big S&G Fan. I almost cried when they split up.
I was just thinking the other day what great songwriters they are.

The song America...is one of my favs.

Every once in awhile I rent S&G in NY. If you haven't seen it, please rent do; it's good.

17. If this song ain't abouts us Dems, these days, what is?
In the clearing stands a boxer, and a fighter by his trade

And he carries the reminders of every glove that laid him down or cut him ’til he cried out in his anger and his shame

I am leaving, I am leaving,

but the fighter still remains

2. We will line the flamers up and fire tomatoes!
I am a huge fan of Simon and Garfunkel as well. I can't pick just one album, but I do know of others I prefer.

I presume you saw their PBS special: Concert in Central Park, correct? Just wonderful, more than wonderful!

3. Van the Man's Astral Weeks is a much better musical journey through the
life cycle. But that's just my opinion.

5. Love Van Morrison!
When he did a song for just me, 'Brown-Eyed Girl', that was it!

I do love "Into the Mystic" ... how about you?

11. Van Morrison is boring
Van Morrison is one of the most boring performers I have ever heard. I have never understood the fascination with him. And I remember him from the first time around, not just recordings.

Simon and Garfunkel are just about my favorites, although I prefer Bridge Over Troubled Water to Bookends.

6. the best anything ever is strictly in the eye (or ear) of the beholder . .
I have no problem with your choice, though it probably wouldn't be mine . . . but I gave up trying to rate music a long time ago . . . I love most kinds of music, listen to a wide variety of stuff, and just have no interest in questions like "who's your favorite band?" or "what's the best album?" . . . there's lots of answers to both questions . . . as many as there are individual music fans . . . :)

9. No flames from me!
I love Simon and Garfunkel immensely.

It's weirdly synchronistic that you posted this; just this morning Ulex and I were talking about using the song "Old Friends" in our karaoke act, and about how the two of us will be the funniest pair of little old ladies at the market, if we ever get old.

10. Four words: Pink Floyd, 'The Wall'.
'The Wall' and 'The Final Cut' are my two favorites.

I love their work, with the exception of "Bridge Over Troubled Water". I never have been able to enjoy that song.
