I am ashamed of the people in Missouri
Missourians should be proud in a perverse sort of way, I guess. The voters (well the right-wing and fundy Christian ones) have enshrined hate into the state constitution. Amendment 2, forever banning gay marriage, passed overwhelmingly.

I think too many Democrats (and I know this because I had people say this to me) assumed that because of the contested governor's primary there would be a larger Democratic turn out and too many assumed Democrat=anti Amendment 2. That was not necessarily the case. I was on the bus Monday night and a couple of women on the bus were talking about their churches having pro-amendment 2 rallies to urge their congregants to vote in support of the amendment. These women were black church going women who otherwise support Democratic candidates and loath George W.

I think every church that had a pro amendment 2 sign should have their tax exemption ripped out from under them. Why should taxpayers help fund partisan religious activity?

I may live in Missouri but thank god I was not raised in this backwater. "Heartland" values my tush!

FURIOUS I TELL YA!

JUST ABSOLUTELY FURIOUS!

1. Well, What Do You Expect From St Louis?
says the Kansas Citian!

(For non-Missourians, there's a long-standing cross-state rivalry between the City of Fountains, Kansas City, and icky old St Louis).

5. Don't toot your horn so soon....
Seems Kansas City is as reich wing as the rest of the state of MO....
Perhaps amendment 2 didn't pass by the margins it did in the St Louis area, it STILL passed. All that was required was a simple majority and that's what it got...

6. Heh
It didn't pass by much!

Incidentally, I left there a few years ago - couldn't stand the weather any longer - but KC is still better, nyah nyah nyah, except for Shaw Gardens, which is one of the coolest things on earth.

2. This IS hateful...but amendments CAN be repealed. And gay marriage WILL..
happen. Not MAYBE. Not IF. Not POSSIBLY.

It WILL happen. Maybe not tomorrow or next week. But eventually, in every single state...all 50 states...gay marriage will be eventually legal. A wake-up call to the homophobes and haters who think that they have "stopped" gay marriage. You may have won this battle...but you surely WILL lose your war of hatred. Simple as that. Get used to it.

4. Damned Right
I agree with you. There were plent of anti-mixed race marriage laws on the books before they were all struck down as being unconstitutional. We just need to keep fighting and keep vocalizing on this issue until people finally wake up and realize what kind of "law" they've passed.

I just hope I'm still alive to see it happen.

3. Unofficial breakdown of Amendment 2 vote in St Louis County
and St Louis City...

http://www.stlouisco.com/elections/040803un.html
ST LOUIS COUNTY:
CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO 1
ROCKAWAY BEACH GAMBLING - SIMPLE
YES . . . . . . . . . . . . 101,234 39.69
NO . . . . . . . . . . . . 153,851 60.31

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO 2
DEFINE MARRIAGE - SIMPLE
YES . . . . . . . . . . . . 154,638 60.56
NO . . . . . . . . . . . . 100,708 39.44

The conservatives, Republicans AND Democratic ones, basically did a better and more effective job at organizing their base. Democrats and other progressives assumed, WRONGLY, that all Dems were against Amendment 2.

http://stlcin.missouri.org/bdelection/ballotDetails.cfm?ElectionKeyId=1&ViewType=issue&RecordId=1
ST LOUIS CITY:
CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO 1
ROCKAWAY BEACH GAMBLING - SIMPLE
Yes (For the Amendment) 200
No (Against the Amendment) 201

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT NO 2
DEFINE MARRIAGE - SIMPLE
Yes (For the Amendment) 215
No (Against the Amendment) 216

For the City of St Louis results, I can't tell if that's the number of votes against and for the two amendments or the number of precincts who voted a particular way. Difficult to tell.

7. I'm from Missouri originally
and I am stunned at what has happened to my state. Stuff like this wouldn't have passed 20 years ago. What's going on?
