caveat & apologia
it has been pointed out bu a dear DU friend that my occasional posts about hunting humans may be misinterpreted by some as more macho bullshit.

i'll attempt to clarify: i only post such information to shame those boastful posters, of libertarian bent, that flaunt their manliness by bragging about killing helpless animals. *mano-a-mano*, these brave individuals are useless when it comes to a fight w/ a dangerous animal, such as man.

it is true that i have been a hunter of humans. that is not braggadocio. in vietnam, i hunted & killed. as a career law enforcement agent, my job was to hunt humans. although i often had the legal right to kill as a policeman, i have never done so. i have twice disarmed people w/handguns who clearly were an imminent threat to me. i wd not have been faulted had i used lethal force, but i have trained myself in martial arts w/ the express purpose of controlling dangerous people w/ minimal damage.

i do not believe in the death penalty. i don't believe in killing for the sake of killing. although embued w/cynicism from 20 years of seeing people @ their worst behavior, i view the ending of any life to be a last resort.

my sincere regret if i've offended any1 w/ these comments, or have been misunderstood as yet another butch braggart.

5. It sounds as if you have had a colorful life, rich in experience,
and no apologies should be necessary, at least on DU. I also don't believe in the death penalty. I live in a rural area, but I am opposed to hunting and against the killing of all innocent life. I am a firm believer in gun control, though I was formerly a card-carrying member of the NRA. And, as you know, I love my animals. I would defend them, or any animals, like anyone would defend their kids. That's the only thing that I could imagine that would provoke me to violence. You have never bragged; you have rescued and defended the innocent.:-)

but I will say, having been raised in rural America and being back here again, I have no problem with those who, like bearfan, engage in subsistance hunting.

10. i have very mixed feelings

on "subsistence hunting". the kill-fests recently conducted by cheney & scalia might be thought of as falling into this category, but they are indicative of the wanton disregard for our environment endemic in these monsters.

life eats life; there's no denying this fact. i'm a vegetarian due to a psychological block stemming from the war, but i use animal by-products: my 2" leather garrison work-belt, my work-boots.

i wish the meat processing industry was more humane, but that's off-topic.

i have known many people, cityfolk as well as country, that needed to supp their family's diet w/game animals. i wd not deny their families needed food, nor wd i ridicule these conscientious hunters that conserve life & honor the animals they kill. my ancestors "apologized" to the spirits of their prey.

my "beef" is w/the ridiculous "sport" hunters that equate the killing of animals w/ "manliness" & brag of their callous mistreatment of animals, game or otherwise. those that wantonly, & often badly, injure animals, not out of need or for food, but to hang a trophy. those who poach, in violation of laws intended to protect animal populations.

those that post ugly & hurtful responses in the threads of animal lovers w/the intent of disrupting & aggrandizing themselves.

sorry i was not succinct on this issue, i mean no disrespect to those that practice sound ecological "subsistence" hunting.

thanks for correcting me & allowing me to clarify my post!

OTOH, although I hate hunting I also recognize how it controls animal populations. Animal overpopulation leads to animal deaths much more torturous than being shot, and the possibility of dangerous confrontations with humans.

28. normally, those populations have natural predators living in the area,
keeping booms and busts well moderated. Of course, hunters and cattle barons demanded that all those predators be extirpated and, well, there you have it--a "self-licking ice cream cone."

He reminds me so much of my kitty who I brought in from outside, except he looks so confident and she did not. It never dawned on me, but this little girl must have had a "head count," as well. I never thought of this, since all my kitties have been indoor cats. But my cat wouldn't have remained alive, otherwise. Animals suffer so terribly because of the carelessness or cruelty of humans.;(

And you don't lose that closeness, even if you lose them. They will always be a part of you and you never lose that emotional connection. I know I may be a little nutty, but I sometimes call my perfect cat, right out loud, on the tiniest chance that she will hear me, and come to me as she always did, even though I lost her at the end of September, 2001. I just don't want to lose that eternal connection, which I do believe exists, even though most people would probably think I am somewhat crazy.

61. So am I, pretty much. And I certainly understand
I don't advertise the fact, since most of my friends are Catholics, like much of my family, but I revealed this to my friend in animal rescue, when one of those "get to know your friends" e-mails was going around. We had quite a discussion about it, since she feels much the same, having witnessed so much cruelty, much of it by self-proclaimed "Christians." I try to live up to Christian ideals, but pretty much lost any faith I still had when I lost my Dad, who was a wonderful human being, much too young and after much suffering. My co-worker, a born-again Christian, tried to talk to me about having faith, at the time, and I just wanted to smack him. I also have lost too many animals, though I have gone the extra mile for all of them. Thanks for the compliment to my kitty. She was such an amazing little being, and I hoped to have her for 20 years. I lost her at age seven. I still sometimes talk to her, as well. She was my 'tonio.;(

62. He must have been very special, as well as a beautiful cat
We love them all, but there are those with whom we have a special connection. They are soulmates. I posted the photo of my special cat. She communicated with me much the same way as another person. I will never know her like again, and I knew this from the moment she did a delicate little leap out of her carrier and into my life. I would have done anything to keep her with me, and I certainly tried, but I still lost her.;(

I have also loved all my dogs, but Barney was special, such a gentle soul. His story touched my heart when I saw him on the "Pet Connection" segment of the Albany, NY, news. The chief meteorologist there is a great animal-lover and has animals up for adoption twice a week. I called ib before the program was even over. I just knew that he belonged in my life. I lost him a year-and-a-half ago, at age 18. I still miss him, terribly, everyday.;(
