1. The Reason It Works
is that if you subtract the two 3- or 4-digit numbers from each other, the sum of the digits will always be 9 or a multiple of 9. They add up the digits you typed in (eg, 214) and tell you you circled a 2, becaue that would make the total equal to 9.

As far as why the digits add up that way, it's one of those strange "9" things. I've never understood that.

3. Ahh - yes, the magic of 9
I remember that from accounting class in college - if you had a mistake of transposing numbers, there was some thing about seeing if the difference was a multiple of 9.
Same concept.
