F***! I have Adware and Spy Bot and I STILL got Spyware!
Right now I a typing from my step-father's computer, but the computer my brother and I share is infected with what I believe to be Spyware. A few ads have popped up and one even cancelled the Adware scan I was performing. There is a white bar above the Start toolbar thing on the desktop and all the sudden everything got slow - overnight! Please, I desperately need help, as I will be leaving for Las Vegas on Monday night and need it fixed by then! Thanks!!!

1. The same thing happened to my computer at work

like a disabled vehicle, the IT department had to tow it and give me this loaner. Your very network connectivity is probably infected--you'll have to back up your files and reinstall EVERYTHING.

3. Do you have an up to date anti-virus? If so, run it.
It may not be simple spyware your having trouble with. I have ad-aware and spybot and they take care of the usual stuff.

4. Use these

  • CWShredder -- will take care of those annoying browser hijacks first
  • HiJack This -- will allow you to take care of everything else, but if used indiscriminately could foobar your software
  • Spybot S&D -- use the immunize function to help lock down Internet Explorer
  • Firefox -- leave IE and all the associate headaches behind

Don't forget to keep Spybot and AdAware up to date.

6. I had this nasty hijack trojan
on my computer. I couldn't get rid of it. I had to go to www.computercops.biz and post on their forums for help. Thankfully someone helped me remove it. Afterwards I read a link from them about security and I installed SpywareGuard and Spyware Blaster and so far haven't had any problems.

7. Ad-Aware and SpyBot have support forums ...
you can try posting on those boards. They may be able to help.

(Ad-Aware Support Forum) http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/

(SpyBot Support Forum)http://forums.net-integration.net/

Computer Cops is also a good site to get help - http://computercops.biz/

Good luck! :-)

9. Spy-bots and spy-ware are becoming more aggressive, so...
make sure you empty your Internet browser's cache. I am very computer savvy and it took me about an hour to finally take off one spy-ware from my computer. I found out after using a program to rid the damn thing, there was an activation program in my IE cache that would re-install it on the computer. Bastards.

BTW, Internet Explorer (if you are using it) is a big virus catcher due to MS using harmful ActiveX controls. I now use Mozilla's Firefox browser which you can download for free AND IT IS FASTER THAN IE. All your bookmarks, cookies, etc can be transferred over with the click of a button (you choose which ones), and for the most part, it looks and acts the same as MS's IE, except faster.

Download and read about it here...

11. There's too much nasty crap out there
Edited on Wed Aug-04-04 01:42 PM by freddie57
You need an IT degree just to keep a clean machine, there are several places you can get help, spyware info forums is good, go to http://merijn.com or it may be org there you can download hijack this and coolweb shredder. Coolweb is truly evil it hijacks you off to places that are a nightmare, really truly nasty crap.
You can go to webroot and get spysweeper, there is a free version, that works really well, I like it and run it, they have homepage protection, and cookie shields, get it I wish I could do more for you.
edit. try http://merijn.org

13. Also try re-running both programs in Safe Mode.
Press F8 as the computer is first booting - you should get a menu in which one of the options is "Safe Mode". Doing that prevents nearly all spyware from loading in the first place. Then when you run a scan, it should be able to clean things out.

16. Thanks
I'm running a scan as we speak, and though it may take six hours when I reboot I will put it in Safe Mode.
