FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. -- Hundreds of dogs, cats and other animals were discovered living in squalor in what authorities are calling a horrible case of animal hoarding. The disturbing scene was on a 22-acre property in Franklin County, Missouri, near St. Clair. Animal rescuers rescued the animals Tuesday.
Investigators discovered more than 130 dogs, over 100 cats, two horses, a mule, a goat, and a duck living in deplorable conditions. The corpses of several dead animals were also on site. The dogs and cats were in cages so small some couldn't stand. Others were suffering from the extreme heat.
"Diving out of their cage into water to get drinks of water, the condition of the animals, deplorable, lack of animal care for these animals," says Carmen Skelly with the Humane Society.
Rescuers say the floors of the pens were covered with feces, up to eight inches deep.
"The temperature is 104 in the shade out there and for these geriatric animals to endure those type of temperatures is not conducive to their overall welfare," says Skelly.
The animals were rushed to the Humane Society, many needing emergency treatment and some with large tumors. The rescue was made difficult because tall grass and weeds made it hard to find some of the animals.
A 67-year-old woman owns the property. She could face animal cruelty charges but nothing has been filed yet.
