I owe $177.30 on my student loan that has been in default since 1986
and then I will be FREE. :)

This last years tax refund has finally put paying it off in my reach.

This has only ruined my credit, my chances for returning to school to get a degree and dramatically increase my and my kids' quality of life...

I think I might explode. That happens to me sometimes...:D

11. I was just teasing you. I thought you were more or less joking
about the situation.

Hey, my wife an I have been paying student loans for years. Don't owe but a few thousand. You 177 sounded great to me. I wish that were that close. Congratulations!

Once you pay off the loan, you can talk to a live person at the school you want and you should be OK. I was WAY behind in my loans and caught up (thanks to my family).

The worst days of that nightmare are behind you. Congrats

17. I've been in default for 8 years
No tax refunds in all that time. I owed a thousand and I've paid $3,000 and still owe $800. It sucks. Fuck it - I'm going to Costa Rica next year. Fuck the government. They'll get their pound of flesh and then some.

Congratulations, my friend. I hope it feels good. :toast:

19. Pshaw! Lightweight!
I owe a certain overseas student loans company a large amount of money, and due to their own archaic laws, I can defer indefinitely. Huzzah!

23. Bloody socialists.
Ironically, they only introduced the whole Student Loans system the year I went to Uni, before that it was (mostly) government funded. As I'm taking this personally, I'm in no hurry to pay it back. And, as long as currency exchange rates remain steady, I won't have to. Hopefully their currency will go into meltdown, at which point I'll happily repay them.

When I paid off my undergrad loans, I actually framed the letter from the school student loan office.

Then, I decided to go to graduate school.

26. Yer so damn lucky
My loans are still through the freakin' roof. I estimate that at the rate I can affort to pay per month, I'll be in the clear when I'm 55 or 60 years old. Oh, but I just had to go to a goddamn private college grumble grumble...

That being said, I blame Reagan.

27. good for you Amber!
I am glad I went to school when it was a lot cheaper. It is scary how expensive college and grad school are now. But there is probably a way to work it all out if you want to go back to school at some point. My sister has been going to school and grad school for 2 decades now and somehow managing to get it paid for.
