Low-carb ice cream triggers spit reflex
By Bonnie Leblang and Carolyn Wyman - Supermarket Sampler

.
Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream. Carb Karma Chocolate, Carb Karma Half Baked, and Carb Karma Vanilla Swiss Almond; Light Vanilla, Light Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Light Chocolate Mint & Cookies. $3.59 per pint.
.
Bonnie: Ben & Jerry’s guarantees that these new ice creams will satisfy your “mind, belly and soul.” Who are they kidding? Eating Carb Karma ice cream is not a euphoric experience. These tasteless, oddly textured frozen desserts are more of a “Where’s the sink? I need to spit!” experience.
.
The new Light ones, though, have half the fat of both regular Ben & Jerry’s and the Carb Karmas and also taste better. Light Chocolate Mint & Cookies is the best, with an abundance of add-ins that mask the light ice cream’s taste.
.
To me, Ben & Jerry’s Carb Karma is certain proof (along with the ludicrous introduction of Pedigree low-carb dog food) that the carb-crazed pendulum has passed beyond ridiculous and will therefore soon start back toward normalcy. After all, I could never before have imagined spitting out Ben & Jerry’s!

4. Can I ask something?
I'm honestly curious about this.

Why do so many people on DU enjoy making fun of other people's diets? One of the reasons I waited almost four months to register was the almost-daily bash-the-Atkins-diet threads. It really bothers me that DUers, the people so supportive of personal freedom, take this attitude so frequently.

You might consider the low-carb craze ludicrous, stupid, ridiculous, or lacking in "normalcy."

You know what? I lost over 70 pounds on the Atkins diet. I was slowly dying. I couldn't bend over and tie my shoes. I couldn't play with my nieces and nephews. I had NO energy.

I am happier than I've ever been, have kept the weight off for a year, and my doctor says my bloodwork is all *perfect*.

Why do so many DUers -- even MODS now -- have such a problem with my dietary choices? I'm not hurting anyone else. If you think that my low-carb diet is ridiculous and lacking in normalcy, well, okay. Why is it such fun on a *progressive* site to mock it, though?

I know I'm whining now -- in fact, I'm sitting here crying. I'm not a confrontational person, and I've come to love this place, and this is really upsetting to me.

5. ((((hug))))
Welcome to DU!

Glad Atkin's is working so great for you.

Enjoy your success and forget that people joke about your "Bacon-GOOD! Strawberries-BAD!" livestyle.

Who cares what we think?

Seriously. Atkins seems to be proof that different eating habits work for some that would be alien to others.

Enjoy your health.

6. Thanks.
I bought a pair of size 10 jeans today. That made me feel so good about the changes I've made....it just upsets me when I hear people on DU who seem to think it would be better if Dr. Atkins never wrote his book. I wouldn't have had that moment of deep happiness today, y'know?

OH, and BTW -- I didn't eat strawberries for the first two weeks of the diet, the Induction phase, over three years ago. Now I eat them nearly every day. I love them. I just eat them in moderation.

And I rarely eat bacon. Occasionally with eggs. :D

Thanks again, you are very kind.

7. I hear you...
and I have my own reasons for dealing with low-carb foods, being a borderline type II diabetic.

But, we all gotta lighten up a little. There are a few assholes here who just like to nag and poke at people, but I think most of it is a reaction to the Atkins insanity, not a slam on those it really helped.

While it certainly works well for many people, you gotta admit it has been oversold and some of this stuff being hyped is ridiculous. Maybe even dangerous.

8. Not knocking ANYONE.. or their DIET..
The article was just commenting on the TASTE of the low-carb ice creams..

I buy them for my diabetic husband, and he said ..."Save your money...they taste YUK"..

The article says nothing about the merit of the product.. just that for the money..they don't taste that great..

As for YOUR diet.. Bless your heart..and I hope you are doing great.. I have little will power, and struggle constantly with my weight..

The marketplace is always looking for a bandwagon to jump on..and sometimes they get ahead of themselves... remember olestra?? This food reviewer may have had that in mind..

9. OK :-)
I'm just touchy, I guess. The daily let's-bash-Atkins threads almost kept me from registering on DU at all.

I am wondering if being diabetic affects the taste buds? Seriously -- I have two diabetic friends who hate low-carb ice cream, too, but everyone in my Atkins support group loves it.

10. It might be from the artifical sweetener in all of his "goodies"
I tasted it, and it just tasted a bit "plain"..not worth twice the price of "real ice cream"..

And taste buds "age" too.. Things that tasted sooooooo good as a kid, taste like crap as an adult :)

11. Hmmm...that might be it. Diabetic candies never tasted good to me.
I'm glad that low-carb ice cream is a little pricey, though. It helps me consume it in moderation. :)
