Is it just me, or does this movie seem to have a lot of potential as a thriller? I saw the trailer before Spider-Man and I was nervous just watching that... of course, I've been fooled by trailers before.

3. I cracked up when they made the jellyfish look sinister
Of course, it could be a Lion's Mane, or some other deadly type. But it did make me laugh.

Actually looks like a good action movie to me, too.

It is like the box jelly or sea wasp ? I would be very afraid of those.

not fatal by any means, but it gave me really bad cramps about 1/2 hour on the surface. I'd hate to have that while alone in the middle of the ocean.

14. I once dived into a patch of invisible jelly fish
from the torpedo deck of a destroyer in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.
Thanks to the divers who had Ajax Meat Tenderizer...and liberally sprinkled it on me.
The MSG actually breaks down the protiens ... but never had an encounter with a Man O War. I give them a wide berth.

Are moon jellies bad news too?

40. It's a deadly jellyfish that figures in a Sherlock Holmes mystery from
one of the 1938 stories. You can actually find the text of the whole story online.

Right now, the England's shorea are being seriously invaded by Lion's Manes and other jellies...!

5. I'm actaully really excited to see this, it is a true story.
And it happened again just this past year, a guy was left behind when the boat the took him scuba diving left without him. He wrote a farewell letter to his family on his dive slate, and took pictures of himslef with his camera so people would know he was left alive. He was out there for like three days when a trawler found him and saved him. SCARY!!

6. Skeptical but I am going to see it.
The Alamo Draft House will show it at Lake Travis. Movie goers will be given tubes to float in and I am told a great white lake shark will make an appearence.

Given that, how good can this movie be?

Guy meets girl, they meet shark ? Its so predictable.

7. Scares the crap outta me!
Seriously, I am a diver. One time I was left out in the open ocean for about 1/2 hour. We knew it was going to happen because of the location of the dive and the currents but it was terrifying anyway. We were out past the barrier reef in Honduras to do a Grouper spawning dive. It took the boat 1/2 hour to find all of us. Big swell, lots of sharks because of the spawning. I doubt I will go see this movie.

and a mirror and a whistle. Damn, I got scared just posting about it. I did the dive 3 years in a row but this time the swells were huge. I never went back and 2 years later the fishermen found out about the spot (the Caldera del Diablo) and fished it out.

Edit Flower Garden dive?

19. Flower gardens
125 miles off shore from Freeport Texas, ( near Houston ) .
about 60 feet down and its a live aboard situation for 2 or 3 days, ( 4 to 5 dives a day ) .
You need to be able to handle your gear and make the 15 foot verticle climb up the ladders, but this is supposedly one of the great dives off the Texas coast.

I am sorry to hear it got fished - as far as being in an open water situation... that has not yet happened to me. I have heard stories from others. I guess there is always some risk but maybe a mirror is not such a bad idea. Have the whistle.

22. It was firghtening
I am not a brave diver, I do it for fun and would do it 6 times a day if I could. We were lucky to be there the first year with the president of the Explorers club so we got to dive under their flag. I was not going to do it but our darling dive master said you go with me, you will be fine. The swells were about 4 feet, he said jump in and go straight down I will catch up with you and go down with you. I put on some extra weight, dropped like a stone (my poor ears) he caught up and we landed about 10 feet from an enormous Bull Shark. It was fascinating. We had to hold onto rocks to pull ourselves through the current and had to push large Grouper out of the way. It was stunning, frightening but something I would never do again. I prefer hanging out on a reef, recording the life there with a camera or my check off sheet. I hate deep dives because I am a chicken but will do them if something cool is there. Been to 120 and don't feel I ever have to do that again. Have fun. It sounds wonderful. 15 foot ladders don't sound fun though! I prefer to handle my own gear, makes me much more comfortable.

23. Diving is supposed to be fun, not about taking risks.
I too see no reason to ever go deeper than 60 to 90 feet - depending on what is there. I am all about safety and prudence. You have far more experience than I do at this. I got certified in 98 and have maybe a dozen salt water dives logged so far.

Reefs are just fine for me too. But there are a few wrecks I would like to see but regarding the limits of sport diving...i see no reason to put myself in a situation where I am pushing the envelope.

Ever read about how many technical divers have died on the Andrea Doria ?
the person who trained me had the world's record for the deepest scuba dive. - 912 feet. His partner lost his life on the same project some 800 feet down. 12 hour ascents....

24. Yes, I agree.
I do it for fun. I have about 150 dives maybe more, my log book is elsewhere. Pretty good for a Kansas girl, I just love it. It is perhaps my favorite thing to do. I took an underwater photography course and just loved it. It makes it unneccesary to go very far so I can just stay under the boat all by myself and be very safe and see amazing things that the others miss by wanting to move out.

I have not read about that. I doubt I will, I can hardly watch Jaws without thinking scary thoughts. You should talk to 180, he did some real stuff. I don't know how people do that. Can you imagine a 12 hour ascent? I can't.

25. With a couple of good flashlights and some paperbacks to read in your BC
Jim Bowden said he was fine with the long deco stops. I think the critical timing at depth and the critical mixtures of different gasses tied off on a line as specific depths makes it way more work - and no margin for error - than I or any SANE person would want to do . His parnter Schck Eckley, used to say there is nothing so useless as air you don't have. You won't see me pining away because I can't afford to climb Mt Everest either.

I do like reading about it - all that peril from the safety of my favorite chair...

But we are talking about sane people. My favorite thing to do is stay in one place and observe the minute life forms, especially if there is an abundance of variety and color.
I am totally with you there. how neat is that?

26. It is amazing.
I have gotten so I never run out of air, everyone gets pissed because I can stay down forever, even if I do the whole dive with them. When left alone I could play with Blennies for hours. Have you ever let the Cleaner Shrimp clean your hand? It took me a long time to learn how to relax (I finally took a Zen Diving course) and learn buoyancy control but since I have it is all candy down there.

29. I am getting better on air consumption
I am interested in the Zen diving course. But I am so much more relaxed than i used to be. Since I often dive with my wife, she is all into the drift dive mode and I have to follow. I can't see her wanting to be parked in the same place for long - some of us have short attention spans.

I would love to partner with someone like you some time. It sounds so relaxing.
I have this thing about starfish. The ones off Costa Rica are blue and white checkered .I am always astonsihed at what I see. On my first night dive I learned octopuses are an electric blue color - sometimes.

30. That sounds perfect!
My husband wants to go go go and see all the big terrain! I hate it, all I ever see are his fins, I am a firm believer in taking care of your buddy but he would leave me behind and never know I was not there. If I had a big coral head or an interesting stretch of sand to investigate I would never have to go deeper than 20 feet or farther than that particular area, there is so much there that you miss otherwise. I have not seen too many starfish, those sound beautiful. Never been in Costa Rica either. I have also never seen an Octopus at night, I am not terribly fond of night dives. Everyone get so bunched up. I do find Parrot Fish at night tucked into their mucus bubbles pretty cool though. The Zen Diving course was a lifesaver for me. I took it in Bonaire at a Divi Resort, I have no idea if they are still there.

We are getting ready to send our youngest off into the world and one of the things we hope to do is more diving, it is way too expensive for 4 of us. Perhaps we could meet somewhere in the future, it sounds like a match made in sea water! Meet you above the bottom (Zen diving motto)!

38. I have never been there.
My husband said it was nice, he was there long ago. As far as I know it is mostly drift diving and there have been many bad incidents there, including leaving people out in the water! I have also heard it is fabulous so I really have no idea. Have you ever been to Tortola? It is one of my favorite places, also close. Not known as a diving mecca but it is a beautiful spot with lots of great critters since they do not overfish the channel. Look into that place sometime, it sounds just up your alley, really! The place we have stayed even has some large tidal pools just outside the rooms with great little creatures to see if you go in with a snorkel. I could go there every year but my husband is tired of it (Booo!). You would love it there, so very much to see and easy diving. The wreck of the Rhone is awesome, 90 feet max with a Grouper the size of a school bus, well not really but very big. They are big on ecology and teach a lot while you are there. I will look into Cozumel, I actually have never even thought much about it since I am not happy drift diving most of the time. Perhaps I have misjudged it.

42. I REALLY really want to see the Rhone.
Beyond diving on Truck Lagoon I don't think there is anything more impressive. I have seen a friend's photos.

Ummm Cozumel - so far its my favorite place to dive. We try to go with the same dive master - a person named Sergio who once worked with Jacuqes Costeau.
I can let you know how to contact him. but yes its almost all drift diving.
there is this wall that drops over 2 thousand feet - its mind boggeling and all I can say is I never had a bad dive there.

Its a marine park, if the divers behave themselves the wildlife is wonderful to behold.
You might just look into it. I don't care for the mainland but the island is a gem to dive - or even snorkel in. I can see the sun dappled patterns of nets of light playing over the sand and reef as I hear the thousands of clicks and pops made by mysterious things.

Costa Rica is not as abundant but it is pretty.

Stay out of the channel unless you are OK with getting carried off to the Florida Keys in about 3 days.

Ever been to the Caymans ?

Or the impression that I got was that producers might think it was boring, so I figure they'd add a lot of goofy shit to spice it up a little. You know, because they figure the American movie-going public has the attention span of a two-year-old. I'll wait for the reviews.

36. The trailer terrified me.
I have only been diving twice (resort courses), and I did fine and enjoyed it very much. But on my last trip to Cozumel, I went snorkeling with a group in which everyone else was diving. The divers got pretty far away from me, and I couldn't easily see the boat for a while, so I felt VERY isolated, and got pretty nervous. I was very happy to get back on the boat!
