Poll question: Best WHITE VOCAL GROUP of the 1960s?
Edited on Thu Aug-05-04 05:33 PM by NightTrain
I've limited the poll to groups whose primary claim to fame was their vocal harmony. As such, I excluded such awesome '60s bands as the Beatles, Stones, Who, CCR, etc.

1. The Byrds were so much more than a vocal group
I know, they had great harmonies and all, but their music was so freaking amazing. Nothing like that 12-string guitar. Those first four Byrds albums are among my all-time favorites.:hi:

When I was born, they threw away the mold. However, some of it grew back (Emo Philips). :D

8. You're certainly right about the 12-string guitar.
"Mr. Tambourine Man" is one of my three all-time favorite Dylan covers. The other two are Jimi Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower" and Manfred Mann''s "The Mighty Quinn." :loveya:

Sundazed released a two-disc set a few years back. Freaking brilliant stuff on it - you should check it out!:hi:

13. The greatness of Hendrix's "Watchtower"...
...is such that Dylan started playing Jimi's arrangement live after he heard it.

When a trapeze artist of Dylan's stature finds your recording to be the quintessential version -- you have struck gold.

3. I love the Four Seasons...
...but I had to vote for the Beach Boys (who I also love, and they actually made decent records after 1964) in order to ensure that Crosby, Stills, and Nash didn't win.

Lotta hippies here, y'know. ;)

22. The Beach Boys
Man, it's hard for me not to vote for Dion and the Belmonts, but they were only around for a half a year in 1960. Plus they stuck to mainly doo-wop.

24. As far as Dion & The Belmonts go...
...I intended to lump in all those hits Dion had without the Belmonts from 1961-63("Runaround Sue," "The Wandere," etc). Granted, they were credited to Dion as a soloist, but he actually had a doo-wop group called the Del Satins singing back-up on all his hits.

29. the chipmonks
Alas, they fell on hard times after changing their image by trying and failing as psychedelic band- Theodore met a horrible end when he darted in front of a car, Alvin struck out on his own as a solo artist but ended up od'ing in a cheap motel room where he tried to blend in with humans, and Simon took up with a squirrel which led to heartbreak and ruin and rejection by both families.
