I am going to the Olympics. Ask me anything.
I am leaving for Greece on Saturday. The games start nex Friday. I will be there for the first 8 days of the games. I am going to Judo, Soccer, Baseball, Beach Volleyball and the Mens all around final in Gymnastics.

Ask me anything. I will be up for a little while, but I will also answer tomorrow. Also check out the Athens 2004 site at the blue bar below.

1. How about "why?"
Eight days of athletic events? In Athens in August? When its even MORE congested than usual? Well, it wouldn't be my cup of tea.

3. My parents are Greek.
So I have a ton of relatives there. I have been there like 8 times. It is like a dream come true seeing the games in Greece. I am not worried about the congestion. I live in NY. I fight it every day. Also they have built many new transportation systems. I don't expect any serious problems.

5. I don't think you should expect any SERIOUS problems
I think you should expect 95 degrees F, however, and a city jammed to the gills. Me, my choice would be anywhere in Greece BUT Athens during the Olympics. I would rather watch the games on a fuzzy TV in a taverna.

6. I know what you mean.
But this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. I have free housing at the home of the games. The only other place I would have a serious chance of seeing the games is in NY.

Ahh Ellas.... I wish I was going too; however, my preoccupation with job hunting makes it impossible, so I will only say "Kalo Taxithi"

15. You'll go one day.
Greece is usually a favorite of European travelers. Its not terribly expensive and its got a lot to offer.

32. There really aren't any waves.
It can get choppy on a windy day, but the water is generaly blue and flat. I never knew what navy blue meant until I went to Greece.

This is from Santorini

21. I am Greek!
However, I was adopted at 4 days old by American parents, who were stationed there. My dad worked at Mt. Parnos. I left Greece on my 2nd birthday and haven't been back. I still have my old Greek passports with my baby picture on them. If the world ends and * gets reselected, I might head back...

23. 36.
I have a friend who is Syrian, but of Greek descent. He chose to go to Greece to serve his military obligations (instead of the Syrian army - makes sense). Since he did not speak Greek, he spent two years working in kitchens. That is starting to sound MUCH better than spending 4 more years with Bush*.

24. My greek boss says "I weep for our future."
He's not totally anti-Bush, but he is also worried about Peak Oil and the state of the world. He wants to move to greece at some point so he is starting to concentrate on Greek women. I hope they don't make him do some time in the service.

26. Well, I did a little research (and I mean VERY little).
I found that if you have resided continually abroad past age 11, and plan to continue living outside Greece, you can travel on your Greek passport and claim dual or Greek citizenship, and not have to serve. That would mean settling in another EU country. I need to consult an immigration lawyer should push ever come to shove though.

33. You have a better excuse than most
However, I really dislike the Olympics. The whole corporate whore-a-thon aspect of games, plus the whole self-important aspect makes my stomach turn.

However, if you folks decide to slaughter tens of thousands of Persians before the marathon starts...

btw I have nothing against Persians, just the history of the thing.

35. What about Softball?????
That's what I'll be tuning in for:D

I went to Greece in my 20s, unfortunately my interest at the time was restricted to partying so we spent all our time on Mykonos and only one day in Athens.

I would love to go back, I have many fond memories.

Have fun!
