What would you do?

There's this guy that lives down the street from me that I've known for about 16 years, ever since we were teenagers. Over the years we've both done a lot of changing. Me, I'd like to think for the better and him for the worse. The guy pretty much hates the world. His favorite saying is, "I'm not prejudiced. I hate everybody equally." But it turns out he's alright with straight, white people.

When he talks about blacks and gays he does so in derogatory terms. I'm sure you can imagine the words he uses. I've told him how I feel about this. I'm a live and let live kind of guy and I can get along with most everybody. Even this asshole I'm talking about now. I've tried to make him see the wisdom in my point of view, but the guy is really set in his ways. He is just so hateful. I don't know how to get him to see past that and join the human race.

I think the guy is a lost cause. I've tried everything I can think of. But maybe I'm missing something. What would you do to try and reach this person? Or would you just say to hell with him?

2. He's not religious or political

He's an atheist who thinks all politicians are liars. He doesn't vote.

3. I know a few people like that...

...and no matter how hard you try, it just doesn't get thru to them. I'm an optimistic, loving (I think) person, and I just cannot get nihilistic, anti"everything" people.
I guess just try to be friendly and hope he realizes that life is beautiful. People can be assholes of course, but the joy we can give to one another far,far outweighs the asshole factor.
