It didn't take long before Clifford Garrison -- the greedy groom convicted of swindling several of his nine wives -- was back to his scheming ways, authorities say.

Over the years, Garrison, 55, has worked his magic with women by posing as everything from a computer executive to a golf pro to an FBI agent -- though he's never been any of those.

When he was married, he cheated several of his wives out of tens of thousands of dollars, authorities say, and he has spent several stints in lockup as a result. Most recently, he was released from custody in San Francisco last November after admitting to defrauding wife No. 9.

But soon after his release, he failed to report to his parole agent, said Lynda Ward, state regional parole administrator for the San Francisco area.

Last month, authorities caught up with him in Las Vegas, and he was sent back to San Quentin State Prison for a parole violation. Authorities say he is being investigated for allegedly defrauding a woman in Las Vegas and for wooing and duping would-be wife No. 10 in Oakland.

Derry Calay of Oakland says she met Garrison in January over the Internet. He soon bought her a new car -- unbeknownst to her, with her own money -- and was talking about getting a ring, she said. "Fortunately, I did not marry him,'' she said. "But I came close.''
