CONFESS! What's a Commercial, Manufactured POP SONG You Actually Like?!
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 04:46 PM by liberalpragmatist
Okay. I HATE almost ALL manufactured pop. I'm into guitar rock and 60s rock.

But I confess.

I like...

"Hold On" by Wilson Phillips

ON EDIT: Okay, I'll admit there are a few more that I like. Many on this thread are pointing out Madonna. There are definitely some good Madonna songs, although I wouldnt' say all of them are totally manufactured. Some of her later stuff has been more authentic. I like parts of Ray of Light - I don't have the album, but I've heard parts of it and I like Like a Prayer among others.

And let's face it. The Monkees were manufactured pop. But I like them too!

2. I like that whole CD..You're in Love is a frikkin great song with
harmonies as sweet as those of their parents...the apples didn't fall far from the tree...while the writing is largely pop pablum, the execution is excellent.

On that note, most of what Sheryl Crow does is pop/rock formula stuff and she freely admits the ripoff which makes it all the more enjoyable to hear.

7. Ok, I'll confess, but hear me out
That "Livin davita loca" (sp) song. Being a songwriter and recording kind of guy, I thought it was cool that they wrote that song, produced it all on computer and found a schlock to sing it and made it a hit. It was pretty cool, in my opinion.

Reinvented dance-house Kylie Minogue, circa 2002 or so.

13. Feeling So Bohemian Like You
by the Dandy Warhols. Although, it may not be that commercial. Lately things I like that I hear on alt. radio end up on commercials... such as songs by the Raveonnettes. Weird.

16. I love everything by The Monkees, and they're not even a real band
When I was a kid I watched the show religiously, and we had their album. I still think the music was as good as most stuff of its time. Monkees songs were even in the top 40.

17. In 1967, they made 'Headquarters' and
'Pisces, Aquarius, and Jones Ltd'. Both those albulms were done entirely by them. Lyrics, instruments, everything. Nesmith even wrote songs on the first two albums, such as 'Mary Mary' and others... He was the driving force behind the desire to be their own group.

You'll NEVER see a manufactured image today dare to prove their selves. They're bathing in money and don't care about how worthless they truly are.

Or maybe the concept of proving one's self is pointless these days? Just look good and get it all... oh, the freedom...

18. I have several guilty pleasures in relation to songs from pop artists
(1) The Backstreet Boys -The majority of the songs that they released during the 1997-1999 period were favorites of mine at the time and still are.
(2) Ricky Martin-I enjoyed his earlier singles such as "Maria", "The Cup Of Life", "Living La Vida Loca" and "She Bangs".
(3) Madonna-Not a big fan but I did enjoy singles such as "Like A Virgin", "Papa Don't Preach", "Like A Prayer" and "Rain". Having said that, Madonna hasn't released a song that has appealed to me in years.
(4) Cyndi Lauper-An exceedingly guilty musical pleasure but one nevertheless.
