Adult diabetes - what is the symptoms?
I'm overweight, and I sweat for no reason when I eat sweets.

Should I go see a doctor?

Ask me anything.

1. Have your blood sugar tested...
I think you are in risk of Type 2 Diabetes....

Calculate your BMI (weight/in^2)*705 and figure out where you fall
18-25.5 is the healthy range...You can also find tables on the net.

As soon as I clicked it, McAfee kicked in with a big warning about a trojan horse.

5. Yes...
see your doctor, and get a blood test; have them specifically test your blood sugar. Because you are overweight, you likelyhood of contracting type II diabetes is greater.
When I broke my ankle a couple of years ago, I had to be off my feet for about 8 weeks. Of course, I did not eat a healthy diet (hubby doesn't cook, so it was mostly fast food); watched tv & stuffed my face. A few months later my doctor told me I had type II diabetes.
If you do have it, find out if your doctor can recommend a diabetes instructor. That person will show you how to use a personal blood test monitor (it only takes a little drop to get a reading, and it's just a little poke on the finger or on your arm). Test as often as your doctor says is necessary.
And visit the American Diabetes Association website for more good info; they have an online store where you can get cookbooks and other publications. The website is at:
www.diabetes.org

8. Generally, getting up to urinate frequently during the night and night
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 06:06 PM by nothingshocksmeanymo
thirst..but it can have no symptoms at all. If you even suspect you have it, get a fasting blood test...it's cheap insurance from a disease which is managable and doesn't have to be deadly.

Sweating while eating is more indicative of a blood PRESSURE problem..eating increases cardiac output.

16. That's how my grandfather suspected he had it
Frequent urination is often a sign of diabetes.
Diabetes doesn't have to be devestating. Three of four grandparents had/have it and did not have amputations or go blind.
My oldest grandparent has had type II diabetes for over fourty years and is now 88 years old.
It is important to get diagnosed, take your perscribed medication, eat properly, and exercise. From what I understand, you will always have diabetes once you have it. You can keep your sugar levels at proper levels though by the above and keep it from significantly harming your health.

12. Your probably not diabetic.......
but you are hypoglycemic. The solution is mostly lifestyle. Diet ( low sugar) and exercise . Go to any drug store and get over the counter glucose tablets. $2.00. Stay off the alcohol which is pure sugar.

13. Just checked online
for my BMI, which calculated out at 24.9, high-end of "normal". How odd...I always thought I was anything BUT normal! :)

17. You don't have to be overweight to have it
Most people who have type II diabetes are overweight, but you do not have to be overweight to get it, especially if you have a genetic tendency towards it. My grandfather was not overweight when he was diagnosed with diabetes in his 40s.
