CatWoman needs computer help, Part V
Edited on Fri Aug-06-04 06:35 PM by CatWoman
I posted a plea for help earlier this week.

My mouse kept malfunctioning, causing the system to completely freeze.

I've pinpointed the problem to one website: www.zap2it.com

The malfunction occurs whenever I pull up the tv listings.

Any assistance you smart, brainy, knowledgeable, capable DUer's can provide would be greatly appreciated.

5. perhaps I should have clarified
I have installed Ad-Aware and Spysweeper, and have thoroughly cleaned up my computer.

It wasn't until after I cleaned the computer that I started having this problem.

2. Wild guess..
Go to tools on the top of your web browser (the window you have open now) click on internet options. Midway down the popup window that opens you will see a row of three buttons click on the first two delete cookies, delete files. You might have a cookie from the tv guide page that is corrupted and is causing your computer to hang.

THE DOWNSIDE is that you will have to re-enter your user name and password on all sites that you visit.

Good luck,
P-B

7. "Doctor! My arm hurts when I do this!"
<visualize arm-flapping goodness>

"Stop doing that."

Get your TV listings from another site. Might be some bad code that screwing you up.

10. CatWoman....
... that is the same advice I would give. I come across a site now and then that screws with my browser, I just quit going there. I'm a programmer, internet developer, computer junkie, etc for more years than I would admit :)

They are probably doing something wild with Java or JavaScript that is making your computer unhappy. Truthfully, even if you were an "expert", you could spend days trying to sort it out. Surely there is a competitive site???

14. Well....
... that is a cat of a different color.

The sort of problem you've described is often the result of a corrupted driver or similar low-level misconfiguration of Windows.

If it continues or worsens, you will have to consider the option of "rebuilding" your system, i.e. saving your document files, wiping your disk clean and reinstalling Windows.

It sucks, sucks, sucks - but it happens and if that is what you have going it is likely to be the only real solution (in that it forces all drivers to be reinstalled and all configuration info to be reset).

But hey, if you can just stay off that damn site for a couple days, then you can know for sure if that site is the problem or there is a wider issue :) :)

17. Cat have you had the system swept for worms?
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 05:48 PM by AZDemDist6
go to http://www.symantec.com/homecomputing/ and scroll down to the lower left and click "Security Check"

have it scan for virus' some worms will get past your virus software.

i had the exact same problem because of a nasty little worm that got by my virus software. Once you figure it out, symantec has the tools to remove the little bugger

good luck!

edit to add.. you can still surf DU while it does it's thing
