You know what they say...the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Hambuger Helper may have altruistic motives, but DOES IT REALLY help?

"Convenience" food...or "The Devil's Playground?"

"One serving of Hamburger Helper contains enough sodium to kill a full-grown stallion. Twelve servings per box."

1. LMAO beware of food that promises to 'help'
as a man, I never was enticed at the thought of being handled by the "Man-Handlers" either

2. My doctor
Just put me on a low sodium (under 2,000mg per day)diet. Guess what?
There's nothing in my pantry I can eat.

One can of Campbells soup has more than that.

3. Do you know about Mrs Dash Salt Free Seasonongs?
These seasonings are great for low sodium diets. Check out Mrs Dash Web-site for low sodium easy to cook recipes.

7. Boy, me too!
I've been low sodium for a few months now and it's rough. I'm trying to keep it to 1500 mg or below. I've never been a big salt person, never really sprinkled salt on things, but it's just so hard to find pre-made food without a ton of salt. If you're willing to cook all your own food, it's not so hard. I don't even miss the salt in my own cooking. But forget fast food, processed foods, even restaurant food. You just can't find anything with low sodium. I had taken to sprinkling lots of rice vinegar on foods I make (esp. my fabulous vegetarian black bean chili) but one day I happened to glance on the back of the bottle. Yikes! I threw it out and got the no salt variety.

Yesterday I tried to buy some beef, vegetable and chicken stock at the store and I'll be damned if I could find any without a ton of salt in it. One can said 950mg per serving!

I don't miss the salt in my diet one bit, but it's just so hard to always have to make stuff every time I want to eat!

4. Processed food does have lots of salt
It adds shelf life and is a flavor enchancer. It is also cheaper than a number of other food ingredients, which allows the company to save money. Unfortunately the trend in processed food is more salt, not less. Americans want more flavor. Agricultural commodities are going up in price and then there's the Walmart factor which makes cutting costs even more important. If you want low sodium, you are going to have to buy fresh.

5. Only had HH twice
Loved it both times. I have a soft spot for processed food.

6. I LOVE HH!
And its cousin Tuna Helper. I especially like the Lasagna-style variety with all that cheese. Alas, since I started eating better I have to stay away from that sort of thing.

8. Hey now!
Don't be hating on the Helper. We've eaten it loads over the years. Not too often now. But damn is it good.

Especially the Beef Stroganoff. My husband calls it Beef Strokin' Off, but I'm sure he didn't make that up.

The cheesy enchilada kind is good, too.

And we do Tuna Helper, too.
