Can anyone recommend a good book for a recovering male chauvinist?
A friend of mine is interested in changing his attitudes about women, and I wondered if any one here could recommend a book or two to help with his journey.

Thanks

1. Don't know of any books, but just tell him
to treat women like a friend.

2. "The Second Sex" by Simone de Beauvoir

A comprehensive, feminist classic...

But as for actual recovery manuals, I don't know... Am sure there are some good ones, though.

To your friend: :yourock:

What an awesome, conscious choice to make...

3. Barbara Ehrenreich's book
"The Hearts of Men", also Susan Faludi's books. There is also a good book about masculinity called "The Warrior Myth," by a man whose name escapes me at the moment.

5. "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston
A novel, but it makes one understand women more than anything else I have read.

6. He needs to read Susan Faludi's Backlash.
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 01:21 PM by jchild

This is a MUST READ for anyone who wants to understand women and the issues they face in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century.

Exposes lies that are being told about feminism and the tactics used by the right and by anti-feminists who now wear the mantle of feminism, like Christina Hoff Summers (the absolute worst anti-feminist "feminist").

This is a great springboard to other stuff. He can understand feminism and the anti-feminist backlash in one book. :-)

7. "Female Eunuch" by Germaine Greer, and "The Feminine Mystique"

by Betty Friedan. Both are admittedly dated, but poignant and timeless in their sentiments.

8. "Backlash" and "Stiffed" by Susan Faludi
He will understand his chauvinism better after reading those, especially "Stiffed"
