Gut wrenching, painful, stubborn, sad, apologetic, name calling.
Can we all get a little more zen about history? This is what happened, now we have to live with it as best we can, and move toward something better with understanding both for the victims and those who have to live with the guilt of pulling the trigger.

1. agh need you remind me of that thread
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 04:20 PM by JohnKleeb
I was fence sitting and got attacked. BTW I am still no fan of chemistry but bio isnt bad. BTW history can be great, history is everywhere, and history is a good reference what to do now, not all history debates are like that. oh and another reason I like history, I am damned good at it too, history can be fun too, parody history is great fun, yes I am a goof as you would call me but can you do the same in science, I challenge you to do that heh.

4. I'm a sucker for fights
I read them, hungry to know what people think and to see how quickly they resort to name calling. Some topics I can handle, but this was is just to emotionally charged and ITS NOT LIKE WE CAN CHANGE IT! It happened, its over, wishing ain't gonna do anything. So why argue?

*frustrated*

7. people always wonder "what if" Beth
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 04:24 PM by JohnKleeb
Thats why, and I agree that thread did get ugly, I thought both sides made reasonable points, and I bet you I get flamed for that but I really
dont know what I would have done. Really I often wonder what if Bush hadnt stolen the damn election, what if Bobby Kennedy hadnt died, and what if the south had won the civil war, etc, things like that intrigue people.

5. Try talking about the House of Orange and the Boyne
ot some people in Ireland today. I don't think some things will ever fade out entirely.
That said, even if we try to move beyond something, its good to have as much information and perspectives - but trying not to be judgemental is hard. I know I am seeing things through my own prism too.

8. Perspectives are good
But do they have to fight so bitterly about it? People (at least nowadays) know that you have to look at all sides of the story. But the anger! Why so much anger? We all grieve for those lost and their loss will temper our future actions. Should we forget the anger would be justified, but we haven't forgotten!

9. Its a funny thing about how hate perpuates itsself.
And it all depends on one's point of view. I wonder how much the pain behind this anger is truely related to the topic and maybe not rooted in some other kind of self focus. That all depends too. We all factor things through our prisms - but I think we are taught to hate by those around us. There is something psyhcologically addicting about being self righteous...akin to being in a mob. We don't realize the toxicity at the moment.

For another insight see The Fog of War. or have you ? by the way, I like history.
Thrive on it.

10. I have seen Fog of War
Just recently as a matter of fact. Thats actually part of the reason I'm thinking like this. I see glimpses of what could have been, and I see how easy it is to just sit back and gnash your teeth about it. But really what does that accomplish? Nothing but a headache.

I fully see why we study history, to learn from the mistakes of others. But I fail to see how arguing yea or nay on one action that is so wound up in the actions before and after that we can't really say how it would change things, I fail to see how that is productive in any way.

6. I wanted nothing to do with that thread
I saw two Hiroshima/Nagasaki threads on the front page - I knew it was trouble. I hid them both, as fast as I could get to them.
