8. Upon reflection...
my CD collection consists of lots of Beatles, Stones & the Dead. Widespread Panic, too, but that's a personal fave. I won't try too hard to convert the uninitiated.

If you want to put together a top 10, I guess you'd have to put in The Who, Velvet Underground (agreed), The Clash, Men at Work (kidding), ummmmm, I'm really not sure...

Other opinions on a top 10, behind the Beatles/Stones?

10. I tend to break this down...
...into 2 views. One is live performance and the other is studio work. When I think live I have to think WHO. The Who turned the live rock performance into theater. The visual effect of the group coupled with the sheer power of the sound...the volume, the feedback all with Moon's chaotic drum style...I still think had a more profound impact on live performance than any other single band. Although I must admit U2 is awesome in concert and come very close to the Who in their live sound but the Who were first.

In the studio it's a harder call. The Beatles of course probably take this but The Rolling Stones stretch of albums from 1968 to 1972 are damn well produced. Talking Heads and U2 obviously deserve mention with the common thread there being Brian Eno. If your not familiar Brian Eno's own albums from 1972 thru 1979 you check them out. His studio work rivals George Martin's and The Beatles.

So to sum up...best LIVE rock group The Who. Best studio work The Beatles

15. The whole CD? Probably Document
Although they had some flashes of brilliance after that. Green, Out of Time, and Automatic for the People were all strong and well above the average band's product but they definitely peaked at Life's Rich Pageant.

12. I fluctuate between U2, REM, The Clash, Husker Du, VU
On any given day any of those bands hit the mark more often than not.

18. The Grateful Dead
I'm sure many will agree with me, and many more will try to point out reasons why they aren't, but to me, there is not now and never will be a band that even approaches the Dead at their peak :).
