3. Open Water
Brings to my mind the loss of 883 US Navy Sailors when the USS Indianapolis was torpedoed at the end of World War Two. Open water indeed.

The movie 'Open Water' pales in comparison.

4. We're going diving in two weeks
so I'm not going to see the movie until after...I'll probably rent from NetFlix. It's intriguing. I saw a special on the divers who were abandoned in Australia. What a tragedy. We've been diving for 15 years and our experiences have all been positive. It's a safe sport. We go out on small dive boats with dive operations recommended by other divers. When we've had to be on "cattle boats" (like the Great Barrier reef trip of the infamous left behind couple), our dive masters have accompanied us and taken care of our group. Some sites only allow a certain number of boats in a day...so the cattle boats are the only boats allowed in. I can't imagine going on a boat so disorganized the crew left divers in the water. It's truly a creepy scenario.

5. A true lost at sea tale.
Quite a number of years ago two divers set out from Charleston, South Carolina in an open outboard motor boat. One of them was an ex-navy frogman. He survived, and tells this story:

After anchoring their boat they entered the water and followed the anchor line to the bottom. They swam around a bit, returned to the anchor line followed it to the boat which they found had sunk.

They managed to stay a-float and together through the night, but during the following day the one man disappeared beneath the surface--gone. The ex-frogman managed another day or two and was rescued by a search party. When he was pulled from the water he was surrounded by several large hammerhead sharks.

A lucky man.
