Whats your favorite under rated film(In The Last Decade)?
I say Boonedock Saints. Awesome movie that got almost no showings. On the DVD they have the commercial trailors for it and I'm not suprised.

btw, I just bought Death To Smoochie and Confidence on DVD. $10.99 a piece! Woooohoooooo!

1. A.I. (Artificial Intelligence)
I thought it was a VERY good movie and very different from the same old shit in the theatres.

I think most people hated it because they weren't expecting a movie that was actually thought provoking.

5. Most depressing flick of the last decade.
I usually recommend people don't watch it. It took three happy movies after I watched it to lift the depression it caused.

7. It was depressing, but damn good all the same.
It speaks to the notion of creating something to love you completely and then abandoning it quite well.

It was a good flick though. Much better than "I, Robot" is going to be. I'm thinking I'm going to skip that one.

97. Eww - that movie was ruined by Spielberg.
What was up with the aliens at teh end??????????

It should have ended with him under water. that would have done Kubrick justice.

he never would have really got what he wanted, but he never would have failed either. The alien ending insulted the audience's intelligence (PUN).

102. Actually, the ending as it was was Kubrick's idea....Plus.
There were NO ALIENS. It was very clear they were extremely advanced Mechas (as foreshadowed they were the only things left on Earth).

Wow, I never knew that. I understood that Spielberg added them. I must say, that is quite cool, however, I still think it would have been better if the film ended under water. Happy endings are over-rated.

Thanks for the info.

106. I really loved this movie up to...
the end. I generally am not that fond of Steven Spielberg since his movies go over the top in cuteness and puppy hugs. It seemed as if they did audience ratings of the end, and changed it to be the over the top in cuteness and puppy hugs ending. This totally ruined the film for me. It even made me forget the wonderful performance by Jude Law. :hippie:

but it was about 5 minutes too long. It should have ended before the crap in the church ... oh well.

My favorite underrated movies are "Brassed Off" with Ewan McGregor (I watch it everytime it's on) and "The Believer." I'd toss in "The Salton Sea" too, which no one seems to have seen but me.

Not exactly under rated, but "Donnie Darko" is another one that a lot of people missed out on seeing. I also liked "May" quite a bit.

THAT was twisted. I wasn't quite sure how to take it, either. It was as though it was 2 different movies ... the first half was pretty striaght-forward, and the second half got a little too campy, at times.

"May" and "Donnie" have this weird vibe to them both that makes them great paired viewing.

Yeah, I don't know if either of them count as they both have a fan base, although "May"'s is much smaller.

Seemed to be pretty cultish, not least because of when it came out (shortly post-9/11, and featuring a plane-crash kinda thing). I was lucky enough to latch on to it and see it in the theater before it vanished. Pretty interesting flick, if you like conundrums (conundra?).

Edited on Sun Aug-08-04 05:31 PM by RodneyCK2
very, very well acted. I think it was originally a Showtime movie, but it is now on DVD. Plus, it is a true story which made it even more touching.

Synopsis..
This powerful drama tells the true story of a young soldier, Pfc. Barry Winchell (Troy Garity), who meets and falls for a beautiful transgendered performer (Lee Pace) while on a drunken outing with fellow soldiers. But the relationship is frowned upon by the other soldiers and eventually leads to Barry's brutal death at the hands of his homophobic roommate. Garity and Pace were both nominated for Independent Spirit Awards for their performances.

original narrative structure & plot, beautiful cinematography... I could go on & on... it gets better every time you watch it... It's very cathartic.

But my local video store is so stupid (in the New Mexico desert -- hard to believe they even have it). They have it filed in the "mature" section along with the Playboy videos -- yeah, there are a couple of graphic scenes in it, but the movie is so much more.

PS - Did you ever get to watch "The Pillow Book?"

It was an interesting looking into S&M. (Anyone who hasn't seen the movie--don't get worked up--it is more intellectual than sexual.)

23. HAHAHAHA..... Well, to embrace it, you have to sort of
leave morality out of the picture. It is really a mask for the S&M lovers, dominate/submissive. I really liked it, although frustrating to watch (the way they deal with it).

I think if you do not understand the S&M mind set, then you rely on morality to judge it. If this is the case, then it would seem very sexist, I suppose.

Nevertheless, an interesting pick.

But something rubbed me wrong with several points in the film. I've only seen it once, so I haven't really sat down and put much thought into it. However, that's also the point of great filmmaking--it made me think a lot about it, even months after I had seen it.

31. It has been awhile since I have seen it, but..
for the guy, the need for it was something that was just built in and so throughout the move it was a struggle, sort of a come to grips with a so-called normal relationship peppered with his need to dominate.

For her, it was more of a fetish. Yeah, the way they interlaced all this together with their love, both on again, off again, for one another was very unique. A lot of emotions, and agony, were hitting the windshield. I definitely need to see it again to really analyze the picture.

74. Husband and self staying overnight
in a hotel when our son graduated from college in December, both of us woke up in the middle of the night and this movie was playing on whatever channel we left on the TV when we fell asleep. Neither of us knew the other was awake and watching it, and neither of us reached for the remote to turn it to something else, just watched quietly hoping to not disturb the other.

Both of us the next day, with semi-puzzled looks on our faces, and at exactly the same time, talked about this weird movie we saw on the TV. Both of us agreed we were left hanging in some way by it, like there was more to the story, or else it was horribly done, but we never came to a consensus on it.

A wonderful movie...

Synopsis...
An iconoclastic single mother (Oscar-nominee Juliette Binoche) and her young daughter move to a village in France and open a chocolate shop -- that's open Sundays -- across the street from a church. At first, Binoche's rich, sensuous desserts scandalize the town, but soon the villagers welcome the newcomers with open arms. Judi Dench, Lena Olin and Johnny Depp co-star in this 2000 Best Picture nominee.

If you haven't read the book, you must ... they absolutely ruined the end of the story in the movie. I won't say how, in case I ruin it for you.

I teach the book, but only show the end of the movie to my classes so we can discuss why they would have done that. I think the rest of the movie is just too 80's--and as someone who grew up in the 80's, I don't mean that in a good way! But, the music (Yaz, Kate Bush) is pretty good.

56. "The Chocolate War" is THEE underrated movie of all time.
It's from the eighties, but for me, seeing it for the first time at 13 was a total breath of fresh air after being force-fed John Hughes's vision of young adulthood; I could actually RELATE to the hero! I find that impossible to say about any of those tired "youth" movies of that period.

And contrary to what other posters have said, I don't think it's dated badly; I like it better than the book too. (Why the fuck does Archie say "Beautiful" all the goddamn time?! It's like one of Vonnegut's cutesy devices that gets on the reader's nerves....)

I could relate to the movie because every year we had to sell two boxes of candy for the School.

I would bring it home and hand the box to my Mom and she would take it to work and sell it for me. I hated that time of year and we had to do it in order to show our school spirit :grr:.

67. Archie says "Beautiful" all the time because he is evil!
Look at his use of the word ... to him, everthing that is bad, corrupted, or evil is "beautiful." Remember, he believes "Life is shit." So, he uses the word without (intentional) irony.

Compare that to one of the early chapters (I think it's before Chapter 10) which opens "Goober was beautiful when he ran." Goober achieves a zen-like state when he runs--at least before the events of room 19 and Brother Eugene invade his consciousness. I don't think it was by accident that Robert Cormier juxtaposes those two uses of the word "beautiful."

As for the movie being dated, well, what else can you say about that crazy dream/flashback sequence of Jerry's mother's funeral? I've showed that part to my students and they just laugh it's so ridiculous.

To each his own, I guess. :)

It was pretty much critically acclaimed, so I suppose it doesn't really qualify as an underrated film. But I love it so much. Philip Seymour Hoffman got robbed by not being named Best Supporting Actor for his role as Lester Bangs.

And Billy Crudup in the Topeka scene - man, I just laugh until I cry every time I see that. "I am a golden god!" :7

sweet and funny. I also like High Fidelity a lot. Not sure when it was made. They are two of my favorite rock and roll- themed movies. I loved the Lester Bangs bit as well.

also American Splendor - wonderful!

77. I love that movie too!
Though I agree Hoffman was good, he also confirmed why I have always hated critics, especially him. The Guess Who my ass! :P

Stillwater was a hodgepodge of the various bands Crowe covered in his first year at Rolling Stone in '73, and often later. The "golden god" scene was ripped directly from what Robert Plant said when standing on a hotel balcony once. :-) I bet too many of those scenes were all-too-real flashbacks for Crowe and he HAD to put them onscreen.

And who can resist the "Tiny Dancer" bus scene?

As a music addict, I can relate to so many scenes and characters. A pretty magical movie!

91. Ghost World. Without a doubt.
Sweet and tender, savage and acid, all at the same time.

It's hard not to like Thora Birch if you're a straight guy, but it was Buscemi's acting that knocked me galley-west. I knew he was excellent, but he was always in a mob opera. With this one, I moved him from the "excellent" column to "One Of The Greats."

another French film released the same year -- really amazing Hitchcock-type thriller

The cinematography in "Harry" was good, but I don't know, it just didn't click for me. But most people thought pretty highly of it though...

73. Star Wars Episode II
I can understand why some people didn't like Episode I, even though I loved it and still love it, but Episode II is MUCH better. I think a lot of the criticism for that movie stems from people who think they're "too cool" to like a Star Wars movie made in the last ten years.

If you can watch the Big Battle at the end of this movie and not get as giddy as a ten year old who just found his dad's Playboys, then you have no soul.

83. Come on man...
The big climax in that movie is stunning, even though it's all CGI.

I love how it starts like lots of other Star Wars action scenes, with people fighting big nasty aliens, then the droids show up, then the Jedi show up, then the BIG droids show up, then the clones show up, then the fit really hits the shan! KABOOOOOM!! And then Yoda goes ballistic all over Saruman who has to cheat to get away. God I love that scene. It's classic Star Wars ass-kicking with super-cool effects that look kind of animated and not entirely real, but damn they still look awesome.

93. Five underrated sci-fi movies
They may not be among the top ten, but they were all undeservedly panned.

1. Deep Impact. Yes, it's marred by hasty editing to rush it to the screen under pressure from Armageddon. But Deep Impact had a lot of surprising depth to it. First, sentimentality was used to manipulate the audience with no qualms or second thoughts. The now-infamous scene of Tea Leone and Maximillian Schell on the beach at the five-mile-high breaker is coming in is one of the most audacious scenes ever filmed. Similarly, the scenes where the doomed astronauts are saying goodbye to their loved ones left nothing to feel-good mystery. And Robert Duvall's portrayal of a bereaved astronaut who is slowly becoming a mystical head-case was beautiful and spooky at the same time. Deep Impact is a gut-punch to a generation of intellectuals who feel they are too hip to be swayed by things as mundane as love of family, hortatory speech, and fear of death.

2. Waterworld. Why this one was panned, I'll never know. It's esthetically beautiful and, it makes you feel as if you're really forever lost at sea. Kevin Costner's acting was a bit deadpan, but that's Kevin Costner. His vision in this movie was one of the strongest I'd seen in sci-fi in many years.

3. The Postman. The other Kostner sci-fi whipping boy. Again, a beautiful movie with an intense esthetic that the critics hated. Somewhat less forceful than Waterworld but with better performances from its actors. Tom Petty's scene as the Mayor of Bridgetown is one of the great movie cameos of all time.

4. Battlefield Earth. I'm convinced that if the Church of Scientology punted this one to the Mormons or the Baha'is, it would have gotten great reviews. It's a modern-day version of old action-adventure "spaceman" movies, smoothly splicing pie-in-the-face humor of John Travolta's Psychlo bad guy with the crowd-pleasing little-guy-wins-the-fight story of Johnny Goodboy and his insurgents. This movie is just not the sickening product of a bunch of overpaid E-Meter jockeys it's usually made out to be.

5. Miracle Mile. This one goes back to 1989, but it's one of the great underrated sci-fi movies of all time. It's a psychological thriller about a young man in love (Anthony Edwards before he became an E.R. trauma doctor) and his flight from L.A. as it is sequentially gripped by rumors that a nuclear attack is coming -- rumors started by Edwards' character himself! Miracle Mile is also a savage dark comedy and a satire on the L.A. lifestyle (so-called).

There they are -- the critics hated them, I loved them.

but it was so much better than the critics...well I'd have to say
"eXistenZ" and "Identity" come to mind. A lot of critics panned these films, but I loved them both.

As for films that citics loved, but not a lot of people saw, I'd say "Fearless" with Jeff Bridges. I came very close to death in a car accident, so the film was very personal to me. :hippie:

114. Shadow of the Vampire!
Definitely the best dark comedy ever released - it even beats out Donnie Darko (ok, ok, DD's not really a comedy, but that's not the point). Malkovich's mad director rampage at the end of the movie is the one of the most memorable scene from any movie I've seen.

Outstanding performances from Willem Dafoe as star Max Schreck, the always fun Eddie Izzard as co-star Gustav von Wangenheim, and Catherine McCormack as unfortunate movie victim Greta Schröder.

I reccomend it to horror aficionados and comedy lovers alike.
