The church would have to explain why these other intelligent beings weren't really mentioned in the Bible. That's sort of a significant omission. And you can't really say your omnipotent, omniscient ruler of the universe didn't know about them.

But if (and that's a big if) it occurred, it would be a short term positive event in that it would IMMEDIATELY unite us (and by that I mean humans), then descend us into ugly turmoil while we try and sort out who we are.

Simple microbial life would suffice to change the face of organized religion, challenging preconceived notions that God created all life - confined to the sphere we inhabit - in six 24-hour days.
