17. So how do you distinguish between 'coke" and "Coke"?
"coke" is a shortened form of a brand name of cola.

"soda" is a specific beverage...soda water (as in "scotch and soda").

"pop" is a generic word meaning (at least here in Ohio) "soft drink".

How do "coke" and "soda" people avoid getting confused about what they're really talking about?

Here, we specify the brand or type of beverage we want (Coke, cola, 7-Up, root beer, etc.) We never ask for a "pop".

Coke is a brand name of a company based in Atlanta. Soda sounds like something from a corny 50's TV show to me.

Anyone here remember 'Pop Shoppe' pop?

29. What might some "others" be?
The purple specks showing "other" have me baffled. I'm still trying to figure out how coke became generic in some places but what might "other" be?

BTW, grew up in Nebraska where it was Pop. Now in Los Angeles where soda is the rule so I've switched. Now when I visit Lincoln and call it soda, they sneer and mock as though I've lost my way in the big city and am now an iniquitous left-coaster.

31. Weird North Dakota statistics
2 people in ND said "fart water"???

North Dakota statistics:

Total responses: 547 (0.35% of all responses, 0.37% of all U.S. responses)
pop: 434 (79.34% of all North Dakota responses, 0.70% of all pop responses)
soda: 98 (17.92% of all North Dakota responses, 0.17% of all soda responses)
coke: 8 (1.46% of all North Dakota responses, 0.03% of all coke responses)
other: 7 (1.28% of all North Dakota responses, 0.09% of all other responses)

"other" reponses:

2 Fart Water
1 drink
1 pop under age 5 soda after age 5
1 Morgan Coke
1 I grew up in the midwest saying pop, but moved to the east coast and quickly learned saying "pop" would get you many stares. I switched to saying soda. I have moved back to the midwest and even thogh saying soda get funny looks here, I can not go back to pop. I just sounds strange. Once you go soda, you never go back

Ever since I moved out west and learned tonic was something you used for your hair I've been considered rather stupid by the locals...Turned off a potential girlfriend when i dipped my comb in Coca Cola, substituting 7-Up made no difference..."What about Dr. Pepper!" I shouted as she left but indeed she was gone forever...Sometimes I just don't understand people...

Tonic, from New England, for real Americans, and not those no account losers that had to migrate west to other places, like Ohio, where the competition wasn't as tough.

By the Jesus, to hell with all you guys and your damn letter "R"'s.
