All-time greatest NFL quarterbacks
Edited on Mon Aug-09-04 12:25 AM by tcfrogs
What do you think? A friend & I agreed that the top 3 have to be, not in order:

Joe Montana
Johnny Unitas
Terry Bradshaw

Beyond that, how do you rank the top 10? We included the following:

John Elway
Brett Favre
Roger Staubach
Fran Tarkenton
Troy Aikman
Dan Fouts
Jim Plunkett
Dan Marino
Jim Kelly
Ken Stabler
Phil Simms

Any other opinions????

ON EDIT - Forgive me, you can include older QB's, but I don't have enough knowledge to rate them.

3. Any poll
on sports will result in a arguement.

But...

You can talk about your takles and guards
And your fullbacks gaining yards
And the ends who run the hooks and down and outs
But when it comes to glory
The quarterback's the story
And he's the one the fans want to read about.
There's Knapp and Jonny U
Staubach and Gabriel too
And Tarkenton, who scrambles for his doe
But of those who pass the ball
The coolest one of all
Is the hero of the Jets team, Broadway Joe.

5. Steve Young & Broadway Joe belong on the list too
My friend was unimpressed, so I forgot that. I agree, he belongs in the group picture. I didn't see enough of Namath, although I know a lot about him, so I can't make a good enough evaluation.

6. In terms of excitement ...
Elway had a way of keeping you on the edge of your seat to the very end. Always fun to watch a game with him playing. Just never knew what would happen.

Can't disagree with anyone on your list.

7. You young whippersnappers . . .
How about Otto Graham, Sonny Jurgensen, Y. A. Tittle, Bart Starr, Eddie LeBaron and (even though he is a Republican) Jack Kemp?

both from my alma mater - but, before my time. I did mention Starr & Graham in my private conversation, but again, before my time.

19. Dan Marino
Most gifted passer in NFL history. He could lead fourth quarter comebacks just as well as John Elway. Quickest release of any quarterback in any era. He helped those medicore Dolphins teams in the late 80s from being flat out terrible. If only Dan the Man had a running game for even a few years in his career. Just a couple Super Bowl rings and we might be calling him the greatest quarterback ever.

As a Dolphins fan, I'm biased to say that he his the greatest quarterback ever, though. :)

(And yes, our offseason sucks. Please, I don't need more reminders.)

22. The only difference between Marino & Elway is...
Elway had Terrell Davis when he won his 2 Super Bowls. Marino NEVER had a really good RB.

20. It's not hard looking at my username to guess mine.
Joe Montana. Oh,how he spoiled us in the Bay Area! What a great time we had . I miss him so. I have tapes of games etc.but nothing can compare to watching him actually playing. He never gave up and neither did we.

I have all kinds of Montana stuff. Even named my Cockatiel I raised from a chick Montana. And that was the first word he spoke.

Not taking anything away from all these other wonderful qb's but Joe Montana brought me the love of football I'll always have now.

21. The best..
If the measure of "greatest" is w/ the most titles, Otto Graham is the best (and my pick)QB of them all. He took the Cleveland Browns to either the NFL or AAFL title every year of his 10 year career, and won 7 times. He was probably the first "game manager" QB, too, and did it brilliantly.

23. Agreed
and, as I said earlier, I don't have the historical knowledge of the Pre-Super Bowl era. I do know that Otto was a great QB. Just didn't know where to rank him.
